SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Slightly Off Topic - X5 is gone...

to quote somebody that knows cars/trucks very well:
"A Range Rover is like a satellite launched from the dealer that never quite reaches a high enough orbit to escape gravity. It just goes in ever tightening concentric circles around the dealership until it plows into the service department and never leaves. "
Sounds like this will be an interesting ownership experience... maybe not so many mods... headed in tomorrow for the window tinting and then we will see about some wheels and tires (1 pc wheels I might add).
Car is under warranty thru 3/2015 and I plan to be out of it before that.
So far, I am pretty impressed with the car. We drove it home in just a totally down pour and the car is very stable - I might even say better than the x5 was in the rain. The power is a lot of fun and overall the quality seems pretty damn good. One high point - the seats are AMAZING.
Car was tinted yesterday. 15% all around (yes even the already tinted rear windows) and the windshield was done with 35%. The car looks tight.
So, next step is some wheels...

I'm a big BMW guy and will always love the X5. I actually borrowed a friends X5 yesterday to move some stuff into my new place...can't fit a coffee table, TV stand, and paintings inside the trunk of the R230.
As a huge BMW guy, I'd slam you for ditching a BMW for a Range...but the truth is that I think BMW is losing their way a bit. Their prime was from 2000-2005 or so. The new X5, 5 series, and even 3 series don't have that special BMW feel.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
We both really enjoyed the BMW. It was a great car. We had zero issues with it (other than the local deal who can suck my left...) But, the car was out of warranty, had just under 50K on it and my wife wanted something new and this happen to appear... so...
I have driven the car a couple of times and I like it. Oddly, it is actually a bit smaller than the BMW in that there is now just a little more room in the garage.
Right now, I am am contemplating the Passport Radar system that I have in my SL for the RR and also looking for some rims...

Honestly, I prefer the V1. The arrows on the V1 really can't be matched and the V1 is also still better at detecting false alarms...at least initially.
The passport picks up a ton of false alarms (even with X band disabled). While the GPS system will eventually "learn" the false alarms, it still picks up stuff the V1 doesn't even acknowledge.
Radar range is a wash. Sometimes the V1 is better at picking up threats...sometimes the passport picks them up better. Depends on the situation...and the mounting positions of both units may have something to do with it.
Considering the price difference and ease of install, I say a hardwired V1 is the best bet.
The 9500ci does come with laser jammers, but I've seen some tests that indicate that the passport jammers are almost worthless. I have my jammers on, but I would be suprised if they actually work.
And uh, yes, I wouldn't start doing stuff to the Rover just yet. Might want to find out if that's something you want to keep, for the reasons above, and the fact that it's just so boring (sorry).
Wifey and I had been looking for an SUV for winter and hounds for weeks. Most did not seem to have head room for my tallest Grey. I decided to bring Seamus the hound with us for testing. Most dealers frowned on the idea of a dog jumping in the back of a car. We drove past the Merc dealership and decided to go in. I asked if I could test fit a hound. They said "sure bring him by anytime". 30 seconds later, i am walking through the showroom floor with Seamus. He jumped in the back of the ML without bumping his head. We bought it.
. If they are anything like mine, they get scared with too much car movement. Long legged dogs are not too stable at no speed, but stable as hell at 45mph.
