Engine Oil to use for 2006 SL55 AMG
This is the first time I try to change oil for my 2006 SL55 AMG. Should I use Mobile1 0W-40 or 5W-40? MB recommended 5w-40? What is the different between them.

Depends on the Temperature
I would stick with the 5-40 multi visc oil. 0-40 is REALLY thin. Might be helpful if you live in a frigid climate during the winter and neet to start the car frequently when cold. Thinner or lighter weight oil will move more readily through the oil pump and passages when very cold. But truth is 5-40 is pretty darn light weight to begin with. I'd say stick with 5-40. You also may want to consider Amsoil full synthetic. It's really great stuff.

Use AMS oil and see if MB honors your warranty. It might be good, but the lawyers won't like it...summary judgement.
Use a fleece filter too.
m1 is on sale stock up!

Summer temps
No problem! In Cali or Fla or anywhere its warm all year and piping hot in the summer, I really think the factory 5-40 would be preferred. Keep in mind, hotter temps will thin the oil. 5-40 is already pretty thin to begin with. If you lived in Michigan or Minneapolis, I'd say go with the 0-40 between October and April. But where you are, I would actually stick with the 5-40. By my own admission, ad good as advanced full synthetic oils are (Mobil-1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc.) I don't think you are risking on iota of harm either way.

both are good.
mercedes started with m1 0w40.. in 2007 it switched to m1 5w40 esp on all models and it is recommended also for pre-07 cars
so.. if 07+ run 5w40 esp, if older, you can run either one
i personally run whatever i can get - usually 0w40 as 5w40 esp is available only at few places outside the dealer network
