1) buy the 63 AMG steering wheel with paddles in the back and make it plug and play to the column socket
2) Just like Member okbarnett said, using the existing 55 AMG wheel and do some DIY work to attache the paddles in the back
3) We can offer the total solution for conversion
with this wheel and our paddle conversion, SL55 owners can upgrade the wheel to 08~ type (AMG 63 paddles in the back)

if option coding is not available, there is potentially a work-around that will allow you to use the new paddles in your car (again, along with the converter module)
If you want to PM me your VIN, I can see if I can give you a somewhat more specif answer for your car.

then, I looked on Ebay and found a 2005 sl500 sport .... that HAS shift buttons http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Only-...item3f1559ef17 and checked its VIN in the EPC and it shows the shift buttons are applicable and that the car was option coded 428 and has the 7speed .... the implication is that your car could be coded the same and use the buttons (or paddles along with the converter module). I have to take a little time to compare the equipment on your car to VIN of the one in the Ebay add to see if you need anything else (support wiring, different TCU, clockspring or Jacket tube module) ... it is posible that your car would only need the coding .
I will look a little more when I get back in town tuesday or wednesday
