I just got the renewal form from the CA DMV for my 2004 SL55. I almost fell off my chair $820!! ($69 reg + $727 license +$24 county)

This is for a car with 63K miles that is worth between $25K and $35K.

How is this possible? My 2002 911 turbo (value $50K) and 2008 M5 (value $80K) were not even this much when I owned them.

What are you guys paying?

anybody know if its any different for my 04 E55? Its due in May and I'm not too thrilled about it. My 02 was only $147 to renew a few months ago, but whats ridiculous is that my friend's 1990 Mazda 323 beater he got for $500 was $102. That's 2/3 of my 02's fees!

Its getting out of hand and I see no end in sight. The only thing not inflating in price are used Mercedes cars it seems.

sounds like CA is similar to MI - registration fee is based on original purchase price of vehicle.

Called the DMV - four times - lol.

Seems they miscalculated the value of the car and have it listed at $110K even though the purchase price is clearly written on the back of the title at transfer time and my DMV fees (state tax) show a much lower purchase price. Fees should be like $225 not $820.

I have to send in paperwork and DMV has to re-issue a new title as it is currently branded with Class 'MA' which means value more than $90K.

I'd advise you CA guys to double check your fees and title class. The VLF fee should be 0.0065 x purchase price.

I am the original owner on my 2005 SL55 and my renewal for this year is $227.

Last year my registration on my C63 was $760 for some odd reason.
This year its $400.

I believe they lowered the VLF fee from 0.01125 to 0.0065 in July 2011.
