AMG raises the bar

7 speed transmission will be used on the 2004 SL55 and SL600...

See CAR magazine (out of the UK) July 03, page 20... "The all new 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic... is tough enough to take the extra grunt planned by AMG's engine meisters. It will be a standard fitment on all new AMG cars."

They stated the current 5-speed is close to the limit of handling AMG's torque adjustments.

Also, CAR magazine mentions "... the top AMG benz will be an SL fitted with a tweaked twin turbo version of the M275 V12 that is expected to pump out an astonishing 700bhp. The car will be built strictly to order, with individualized trim and even engineeering."

Looks like the SL55 is just the start of things.

My sources inside AMG still unofficially tell me *no* 7G transmissions for any AMG's for 2004.

I guess only time will tell for sure.

I am with awiner on this one...I do however, know that the 7-G has been confirmed on the MY04 W211's. This info. was given to me by a MBZ Regional Rep. for the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, he was tight lipped with any other info on this tranny!!!

The 7G will appear on several non AMG 2004 models. The CLK (W209) will not get the 7G for 2004 as they are early releases. 2004 CLK's are hitting the streets now.

SL65 AMG (New and potent!)

Here's the real machine!

Unwrapped at the Geneva autoshow was the new SL65 AMG.

This twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 produces 612 hp and 730 lb-ft of torque. Styling has new wheels and and a more aggressive front spoiler incorporating air outlets in front of the wheel arches.

(Just wait until RENNtech, Lorinser, Carlsson or Brabus gets one of these to tweak!)

Coupe and sedan versions will reportedly follow.

No word yet on US availibilty.

Of course, if this scan fits into this block with legible quality, you can read this for yourself. I summarized it in case it does not. This peice was scanned from the Insight section of The Star magazine, the official publication of MBCA. (July/August 2003)

Nice, but the car has got to be about $200K US, and with over 700 lb-ft. of torque hooking up will be an issue. My '03 M5 activates DSC in every gear with half that figure in the torque dept.
