Only one choice of Phone...

You've got the car, it's clear now there's only one possible mobile phone you can have to go with it... mine's on order...

Dear bluesl

I have just taken dely of my car yesterday.

I have a Siemens SL45 phone

I chucked it in the drawer now I have the Nokia 6310i

The software stinks and the phone 'crashes' a lot. For instance last night I was transferring my ''phone book'' in the siemens to the SIM locations so that i could put the chip in the Nokia for instant reading on the Merc. 130 numbers were transferred with the concatenation of the longest name to the smallest name for every number (if that makes sense). In the end (3 hours) I had 130 sim locations that looked like the Rosetta Stone! I then had to go into the Sim location and backspace all the added letters. There are countless other foibles that this phone had that i dont want to bore you with.

I hope that the SL55 has been sorted out....!

BlueSL, are you getting the UHI retrofitted so you can use it in your Mercedes SL55 ? Or you just gonna live with having two phones one for the car and one for your pocket?

It would be nice to put it in the car but I doubt it's possible without an awful lot of messing about.

As it is, I never take the 6310 out of the car and up to now have been using an SL45 when not driving.

Supposedly, the UHI will allow you to use any Siemens, Nokia or Motorola phone and can be retro-fitted.

Do you use two separate phones numbers one for the car & another for your other or a duplicate sim ? (unfortunately, my provider does not allow duplicate sims yet) that's why I'm yet to switch from my 6210 .. Actually I bought a 6600 Nokia phone but sold it immediately because I was bothered by the fact that I can't use it for the car and went back to my trusty 6210!

I didnt order the factory option phone system for my SL55. Anyone know if it is possible/easy to retrofit the MB system and the approx. cost? Perhaps the wiring loom is already there and terminates inside the centre console box? Thanks

The factory option was $520 or something like that - I'm sure it would be outwards of $1000 to retro-fit. There was a factory option for the wiring also so you might not have the wires if you didn't select that option. It is possible to retrofit, but might be pricey.

Hi, as you are in UK, theres no prewiring :-( Only the aerial is preinstalled on the rear wing.

Its a bunch of parts etc to install it, but I have seen it done by my local dealer on another SL (Im friendly with tech. there, so he told me what was involved) - my local dealer is Greenoaks of Bracknell - I would suggest you use them to install it.

Given the UK law is about to change to allow mobile use only with full handsfree or bluetooth kits, its very nice to have the steering wheel controls for the phone / address-book etc

Cheers

Anyone from the UK / Europe care to answer this? What do you guys do? two phone numbers or a duplicate sim that stays in the car?

Yall Europe guys are super lucky. We're stuck with the outdated v60 and the even more outdated Timeport! And we don't get as many designo options either!

in switzerland i pay swisscom 10 francs a month extra to have a duo sim chip - i stick that in the S600 phone and use the 6310i of the SL55 as the major phone - then i infra red the 6310i to a laptop and synchronise outlook contacts and then retransfer to the other sim chip so that everything is the same on both chips.

That's so not fair. Down here in USA/Texas most companies don't use SIM cards. Very few do. Also will a SIM Card duplicator do the same job? And do both phones ring?

in my s600 if the phone is on and i also have the phone of the SL55 turned on cos i forgot to turn it off - it all gets screwed up - 2 'live' sim chips conflict with each other and the calls get cut off at odd times. apart from that if you follow the rules there is no problem. by the way my wife has a volvo v70 t5 with the same set up and the signal is ****

the s600 sound quality and reception beats the sl55 by a mile too.

I think the sound reception being bad is in most R230's. Whenever I call my dad from home or something he has a 70% chance of the call being cut off. I know it's not the phone nor the service because if he takes the phone out of the cradle it works perfectly!

same for me in the sl55 - i take the phone out of the cradle and it worls fine - all that open top noise does the phone no good. however i have to say that top down everthing works on this new car of mine - linguatronic and phone

s600 being a ''closed'' car - no problem whatsoever - signal and reception is perfect

Forget it, turns out this is a nasty little runt of a phone, cheap looking plastic case, I had hoped for a well made alloy case like its predecessor.

I was quite shocked when I saw the SL55 phone - nasty plastic case and when I went to another phone shop, the only one they had was a broken one where the two parts had come apart. Sadly, it looks like "SL55" does not mean good build quality everywhere in Germany. It's almost too small too, fine for a ladies purse but not for my large hands.

The SL45 was very well made, a great phone to hold and use, the new one is not.

agreed - the new phone is not a patch on the nokias

my sl45 gave me so many problems

now i am in heaven with the clarity of signal and reception of the 6310i

so SL55 PHONES dont go with our cars - i think we can safely say that

BlueSL, yeah it's crap. I bought one, used it for two days, then gave it to my assistant. I keep waiting for Vertu to offer car kit integration since it's only a Nokia at heart. They say it's coming but nothing for over a year. They've only just gotten color displays and even at that it's nothing really exciting! But, after using it I haven't been able to use another mobile. NOTHING is built better (as well nothing should be for the premium one pays).

i am changing my mind a bit here on the siemens sl45 - my wife uses it from our house in the french alps 40 miles away while i am in geneva using the nokia (in or out of the car)

the clarity of reception and audio on her phone is stunningly different from when we used to talk in town... very clear and never cuts off any more. must be city air traffic... anyway the nokia 6310i si still better imho

but i agree bluesl - big hands and the siemens dont go together. sides i 'lost' it in my pocket i couldnt get to calls quick enough sometimes !
