Is it possible that the bearing would knock or chatter like many industrial bearings will do for awhile prior to failure? I guess the problem is hearing it.

the fronts are going to be a wet style, but the rears sealed. i would really doubt you could hear anything unless it was literally seconds away from going.

I have looked at other cars, like a Lexus IS350C and the Infinity G37S and even a Volvo C70 but really there is just no other car that looks as sexy as the SL does. Ever since I caught a glimpse of one on the road back in 2001 and always wanted an SL and now I finally have one and it is fun as hell to drive.... but that said, I did say if a car I own ever leaves me stranded I would get rid of it... and of course it had to happen with my dream car! So now I am torn.....

Well I am off to pick her up. I am sure once I step on the gas and feel the G-force slam me back in the seat I was just say "F-it", spent this much money on her... might as well keep her and enjoy her!

I just hope she does not let me down again

Will post a picture or two when I get it home with the new CLS AMG engine in place... I am sure it looks the same as it did....

Why are you guys so sure it's the bearings? It could be something ells ...... before the intake .... the broke off ...... plastic fittings from the air cleaner ...... easy to break something if working on that ... could course a chain event ... also ..... could be a bird that went through the air cleaner and into the supercharger ........

Here a deer that went into an engine .......

Seems to run just as it did before the old one blew-up but I have not tested it yet using my PLX KIWI Bluetooth and Nexus-7 to see if it still does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds like it did before the new engine.

Once I am sure the new engine has no leaks from the install I will really test it out.

One note, the loud whining sound is still the same as the old engine and the MB tech said that is normal when the car is started as it is the ICS pumps or something like that. So for those with the loud whining sound at start-up it is not the bearings in the Supercharger... which means I really had no warning sign that something was about to go in the blower..... it just went.

I do have a slight oil leak and it looks like it is coming from the lower oil pan on the driver side? Is this easy to fix? Below is a picture and if I can figure out how to draw a arrow to where the leak is I will but it is right to the left of the pan screw that you see.

Gasket

It's not that easy fix-and-go ..... you have to drain for oil and disassemble the oil pan. To do that you will have to take off some other parts but not that seriuse .... most important you have to clean both surfaces to the point that theres NO greasy stuff what so ever on the parts - then you use Loctite 5970

I have to go for both oil pans on my own ......

I managed to fix the leak with-out even draining the oil. It took about 1-1/2 hours and the use of my mechanics car lift and I used this stuff that I picked up from PepBoys:

http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/398620/

Made by Permatex. Had to apply a few coats as the oil would leak out enough that I would have to wipe it down and and apply another coat. If I drained the oil it would have only had taken one or two coats I am sure but did not want to go through the trouble plus I know those drain plugs are supposed to be replaced every time you take them out.

If your luck is anything like mine, now that you have parted with the SL from hell, the new owner will get years of trouble free service out of it.

I went with what I consider the next best looking Hard Top Vert... the IS350C:

Not nearly as fast as the SL55 but at 0-60 in 5.7 I am pretty happy..... plus the electronics in the car are amazing... with Bluetooth, Aux input, voice activation of everything, rear backup camera, park assist... oh and did I mention I am averaging 23.5 MPG... and I drive my cars hard! (just ask the old SL )

Have not looked into what kind of mods are available for the car yet but I have read online and I think there is a youtube video of someone getting a 4.9 0-60 with there IS350.

I actually felt bad about trading the car due to the issues I had with her and the way the transmission was acting when cold and also the hydraulic suspension when I would press the raise/lower button sometime only the left side would go up and down.... so I hope you are right and the next owner does not have the problems I had. But hey they will at least get a low milage engine in the car! Plus if they look hard in the manuals I was even kind enough to put the before and after engine serial numbers in there for them for if/when it needs servicing again.

I will miss the low end torque of the SL... the power that you feel from dead stop on that car is amazing.

Lost a lot of money on that car but it was a good learning experience about purchasing cars on eBay and it was fun for the year I got to drive my dream car!
