SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: SL 55, major problems.
I should have taken delivery of a SL 55 in 3 weeks, there has been a lot of rumours of delaying in the 55 compressor cars from AMG, because of engine troubble.
Yesterday they called me from MB and said all SL 55 at dealers or cars which is delivered, had to go back to AMG for major repair / changes.
SL 55 230: delivery time unknown
E 55 211 : should come in EU Sep. 2003 delivery time unknown.
CLK 209 : 55 compressor is out of the program, it will come with
a normal aspirated 55 with 364 HP in EU version.
When do they learn at AMG, just call KLEEMANN, they can fix all their problems in life.
AMG/K??

lucas - can you confirm that your car was in manufacturing when you received this call? that is, it wasn't a car sitting on a dealer's lot for a month or two and you're just waiting on shipping or something?
if that's the case, this is a new problem. if your car's build date is january or early february, this is probably the original problem manifested simply "late" in your case.
thanks,

How about Fouad he took delivery a week ago.
No mention of any problems.
Say doody...saw your question on the tranny...have you checked out the online owners manual?...there is a nice section on transmission operation:

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Wish I did work there.
My SL 55 is from 01 2002, sitting at the dealer waiting for release to me 1/4 2002.
They can't tell me when I can have it, the new 211 E55, should come in Sep. 2002, it will not come this year.
CLK 209 55, will come without compressor as the 55 we know from today.
There must be a problem some where ????.
my assumption based on the data i have thus far is that SL55 PRODUCTION IS JUST FINE. they had a bump in january or thereabouts, it's been addressed. cars produced before the problem was encountered need fixing, but there's no new news.
of course, it's all informed conjecture.

My answer to your question about the release of the W211 E55k is probably that it will be shown the press in July or August, released in Europe in the fall 02, and in North America Spring of 2003.
Why would MB want to overshadow their billion dollar investment in the new E-class by turning loose the AMG version in top of it.
The new E-AMG would be an instant magnet for press coverage and it would suck all of the air out of the tent and distract from the outstanding new features of the E class. I sure MB wants the new E class to stand on its own for a few months.
Most E-class sedan buyers aren't going to long for the AMG version, and settle on the E500 or other E models. Most E-class buyers don't care if there is a version that can go 0-60 as fast as a Porsche. Most E-class drivers will be buying upscale transportion not performance -- unlike most SL buyers who want to know that their car is breed from performance stock. So it makes sense to put the SL55 out on top of the other SL model releases, but delay the launch of the E55k.

Oh, the CLK55 is built on the C-class frame -- probably having trouble getting it to handle the torque of a SC55 -- but I'm sure some tuners with shorter warrantees will strap one on for people...

and the E 55 comes in Sep.2002.
AMG have been pushed by mother company (DC) to be ready at
launch ( Sep.2001 with SL 55 at Frankfurt IAA ), and this week
at Geneva motorshow with E55, when there is premiere on the new 211.
If they AMG couldn't manage these tasks, DC would sell them off.
AMG have been under extreem pressure.
SL 55 officially should come out in April 2003, 5-6 month after
launch of SL 500 ( Then they can sell 2 cars to all the guys which had taken the SL 55 from the begining ).
But cars have been out at the dealers since January 2002.
Something is wrong with the engine, and it's not just a small problem there where in Jan / Feb 2002, it serious.
I will try and look into it via some friends I have in Germany.
ordered SL 55's too.
Every bodys mouth is closed as a camel *** in a sand storm, from AMG side.
The only thing I hear is " Major engine problems caused by trying to rush into the market "
I will give info when I hear more.
I checked out with some friends in England and France who
ordered SL 55's too.
I will give info when I hear more.
Im in England, on SL55 list. Apparently all SL55 orders have gone to MB UK [with original order dates] so that can arrange the deliveries to the dealers in the order that the customers originally placed the deposit. For me thats almost 5 years ago :-)
I dont think this means there is a problem, it just means MB UK is being slow at processing all the orders, which is perfectly normal !
I will post the moment I know more , of course !

This reported problems is 4 months old. This problem was reported in European car magazine last month and it takes a monthly magazine about 3 months to print.
This Lucas Dude is hte most misinformed Dude on this board. The DUDE always comes in with the bogus information throws in some of his phony contacts, friends that know nothing apperantly throws in words like England and France and thank God guy from England was here to prove this clown wrong again. I don't know who he gets these phone calls he talks about from but it sure sounds like his phone is permanently disconnected.
