SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Anyone cut their filters open? And get metal shavings?
I think my car is very, very ill. What is a common wear item? My denial is hoping its something as minor as one of the (many) timing chain guides...
Are they aluminum under the UHMW?
And I erroneously posted this post in the wrong forum earlier, and didn't get replies!
"Anyone else cut open their filters after a service?
Did mine for the first time, and got a 'not insignificant amount' of shavings...It's non ferrous, and the amount would probably cover a key on a standard computer keyboard...I'm completely unfamiliar with this motor. Where should I start looking for my time bomb? Timing chain tensioners?
Car has 96,000miles (154,000km)"
You might shoot amok55AMG a PM and ask him about what he found.
Hmm, that could be it....I'll try and see what he found...I'm hoping I don't have to go deeper than the front cover removal...
plastic shavings are not going to scare the gears inside
plastic particles are usually one of three things - tensioner guides, electrical connector grommets or valve guide bushings.
worn tensioner guides will make the timing chains chatter. you will hear them usually way before they do something stupid.
electrical connector grommets will cause oil leaks which you will see.
worn valve guide bushings will result in excessive oil consumption.
pick one in your mind and leave the motor alone

my 2 cents
