Now that is a squeak

I went to fire up the SL just a bit ago and was welcomed by this:

I did have a small squeak before that went away after the engine warmed up.

I haven't pulled codes, but did not get anything on the MFD.

Sounds like a dry bearing, have you tried changing the belt.
Either that or a fat rat.

I posted a thread on the E55/E63 boards. We share the M113 motor with most of them and they seem to be the biggest group of modders/do it yourselfers. A couple guys instantly said it was an idler pulley. I went back out to look at the car this morning and saw a piece of the SC belt laying in the engine bay. I removed the belt. The double idler had tons of play in it. I started up the car and no squeal.

I am buying a idler pulley kit from Shardul today. Just not sure if I am going with the five pulley kit and the belt wrap at this point. Wifey won't be happy because I just dropped a grand on the SL last month.

By the way, for anyone who recently purchased an SL and is doing some mods. An idler kit and even the belt wrap is something to consider. The idler pulleys are known to wear out. If they do and shred a belt like my car was in the process of doing, they can take out engine components when the belt explodes. I am told the belt wrap prevents that and it also helps keep boost constant under heavy load. Shardul has the whole set up for sale. I can't tell you how many times he has helped me out with car related issues.

I have a ratter (Chihuahua) for that very reason. Could be she eliminated the problem last night. Here is a pic. Trust me, she is much more viscous than she looks.

So I just pulled the trigger on an idler kit and the belt wrap from Shardul. It should look like this when installed, except I am replacing the plastic idler in the lower right as well.

I figure if one idler is worn, the others may not be far behind.

hmmmmm - check also the AC idler - they are sold separate but not by MB - they only want to sell you a new AC - it can easily be exchange ..... and I'm pretty sure I have a new spare so let me know

This pic. shows the AC - and the idler on this - it is possible to change only the idler - my idler went away and I bought a spare ..... but never used it since it was the AC itself that was broken ......

I think you're talking about the A/C clutch.
