Is this article correct? SL no more?
http://http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/car-manufacturers/mercedes-benz/11875272/Mercedes-S-class-Cabriolet-replaces-legendary-SL.html
I just assumed they were adding the S Cab to the line. If true, that changes things for me a bit.

How does this make sense? A huge four seater versus a nimble 2 seater?
As many models as Mercedes has, I believe this is just wrong.

It probably makes sense, as they were saying that the new SL should have fabric roof to keep the weight down.
So now they don't need a fortune to develop an all new SL, so you with the R230 has an classic on your hands.
And the most pretty.

The headline says replaces, but in the body of the article it suggests "joined by".
Here is another article with an anticipated 2019 version SL. I like this better than the R231 version.

Mercedes is just adding a lot of convertibles to their line-up. The S-Class convertible is obviously in addition to the SL, not a replacement, but will be joined by a C-Class convertible, E-Class convertible and the one I am waiting for; the AMG GT convertible.
Unfortunately, Mercedes wants to make the next SL more of a roadster and will eliminate the folding hardtop from its next SL The R232 (scheduled for 2021)

Mercedes have lost their way. Now days you are continually pushed for new
models until you have too many, then they need upgrading every year to
keep up with the competition , and the AMG GT what's that all about, nice
looking a bit like a Porker 928, and a SLS but not a convertible, 125 grand
is too much, another one to add to the range.

I agree that Mercedes has too many models, but they probably have to compete with VW, Audi and BMW, who also has covered every niche that exist.
And with the new architecture where they easily can scale the size of their cars, this ain't gonna end.
The AMG GT is expensive, but it's an awesome performer.
