SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: SL55 Convertible Top/Roll bar issue

SL55 Convertible Top/Roll bar issue
I've been having issues with my convertible top/roll bar for the past while now. When I hit the switch to drop the top, the windows make the sound as if the top was to activate, however, nothing happens. The roll bar is stuck in the down position (I have tried to manually reset this but it does not work) and I can hear the motor as I press the lower or raise button for it. At first I thought it was my pump which I sent to Top Hydraulics and Klaus confirmed the pump was functioning properly. The flaps in the trunk are properly intact and my cargo cover is also fully closed. Has anyone experienced this issue and if so what did you to do resolve it?

Out Of Control!!
Well that sure is a complicated system, about 20 subsystems to open and close the roof, therefore I would not even suggest a guess, except that if I owned a car like that I wouldn't be here, I would be at the dealer where he will use is DAS Xentry diagnostic system to locate the faults in thirty minutes($180)
Is this a case where the repair choice depends upon cutting up the wifes credit card for a week or repair the car---I'd go for the scissors.

Any messages in the dash during (attempted) top operation?
What about the red led on the top switch (if you have an 03-06), what is it doing?
Agree with the above on star das / xentry diagnosis

The message on the dash I was getting was "close trunk lid" when the trunk was fully closed so I went out and bought a trunk actuator as I attempted to epoxy glue mine but that did not solve the job. The new trunk actuator now finally closes the trunk tight on its own. I thought this would have something to do with the top as well but apparently it does not. As for the red light on top of the switch, I have not paid attention to that. I will have a look at it once I attempt it again.

Figured out the issue today. All along it was a result of a bad limit switch on the rollbar. $80. Much better than the stealership quoting me over 10k for a new pump and control module (which still wouldn't have fixed the problem).

Fantastic...how did you discover/diagnose?

It was not easy at all. To be honest, it took over 3 months of diagnosing. I was first getting errors on DAS which pointed to the direction of the trunk. After removing the control module (N52) and reconnecting, I finally got a S83/10 limit switch error. Replaced the switch and found out that the stealership kept my pressure valve open on the pump so this didn't help (only took for diagnosing a few months earlier prior to looking into it myself). After doing some additional research, I went over to the pump and closed the valve and voila! Roll bar and roof work just like new!

Glad this got fixed!
I guess this another lesson on how quirky these cars can be and in some cases, can be so simple to fix. Every time I talk to the dealer about the car, its "Oh man the pump is big bucks" or "these cars are troublesome and not cheap to fix" well like SL55_maniac has said, $80 and works like new. Love it. Patience seems to be the most cost effective helper with these cars (op says 3 months of diagnosing). Happy it works now and it's another good thread for people with the same problem. Now going to get out and cruise in "Betty" today. 30 degrees here in Vancouver so perfect for a burn in the hot rod. Top down of course
Cheers!

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm trying to find info on removing and replacing the roof control module. All of the info I've been able to find seems to indicate that the rear interior side panels, the rear interior center panel, the center cover and the storage compartment must all be removed in order to remove the module. Did you find an easier way to remove the module?
Thanks,

I removed the panel revealing s83/10, however, I'm not sure which part is the 'switch.' Pls advise
Thanks, Brandon

The part number was 2308210551. I sourced it from eBay. This part # comes up with a bunch of different parts. Make sure it is only the actual switch which is clear/see thru in appearance.

Thanks, I cleared the s83/10 code on my scanner, and verified if the 2 switch units worked, which they did, and then put it back on the unit. The roof then starting moving, (so it doesn't look like I'll be needing that part) but I could tell it was slow. Noticed hydraulic fluid leaking near the pump, which ended up being the left roof cylinder. The roof should work after I replace it. Appreciate the help!

My switch wasn't broken-- it just needed reset via scan tool
only took 5-10 min

My roll bar was simply stuck-- I didn't have the popping issue. The fault code should provide a clue as to what the issue is. If it pops back up, I'm guessing you're able to lower it after it pops up, so I'm guessing the manual switch works?

i have same problem . where is that limit switch and how did you come to that conclusion?
