Thinking about a 2007 SL65.

Hi

There is a local, reasonably priced 2007 SL65 available in my area.

Previously I owned a 2011 SL63 which I absolutely loved. I am a big fan of the roadster body, and love me a hard top convertible.

I would like to tune it for the extra torques.

I'm curious what kind of issues these cars had. Supposedly all maintenance has been performed by a local dealership.

I am kind of leery of buying an out of warranty v12 engine, the car has 78k KM's on it (49k miles)

Does anyone still sell catless downpipes for these? I had a quick look around and wasn't able to locate any.

Does anyone have any further comments on it? I drive a E63 currently and want a nice summer car. I understand the COMAND system is going to be quite different.

Finally, Has anyone thrown a pair of subs into the trunk easily? Can I just grab a full range signal from the rear speakers, pass it through a line output converter, grab power from the big battery in the trunk, and be done with it?

There is a wealth of threads on SL65 issues to find in this forum. Others will chime in but take advantage of Search if you haven't already. I'd say coil packs and ABC related issues are most prominent.

Downpipes would be low on my list for mods. Start with an ECU/TCM tune.

Good-luck.

Speedriven has downpipes. You can get them catless or with 200-cell cats. I agree that it should be low on the mod list.

I have RENNtech stuff on my car and even with the modest power gains, have no luck getting power to the ground.

It is hard to get traction without very good tires. That should be first upgrade, lol, Next ECU AND TCU tune, huge difference. Issues are the same as any other car just they cost more to repair. Get your self a warranty. My warranty paid for itself already. One strut replaced=$3000. It definitely is a different animal. I thought selling mine a few times so I can get AWD car( live in Utah) but soon as I take it for a ride I change my mind.

Getting the power down is usually the issue, yeah. You can upgrade tires, you can upgrade wheels- if you have a digital lowering module you can lower the back end at the track to help with transfer. The main thing, though, is that these V12s are awesome. I wouldn't be worried about miles if the maintenance records are there ... if anything that 49K miles might be *LOW*.

check the brakes. The front rotors are very expensive even purchased wholesale.

Depreciation is another draw back. These things tank and are still tanking. I have seen 50k mile cars in the $30k area. Higher mileage for less.

Absolutely beautiful wonderful cars. You will enjoy it.

Excellent feedback. You can definitely be caught off guard with these- $1050 list for the OEM brakes. Tough to find them for under $550, each.
