taking care of your SL55

I'm just curious, how often and what do you guys do to your SL to make sure it runs in top shape?

I know the manual gives recommendations on how often to change oil and stuff, but how do you guys do it? What brands do you recommend? I'm talking about all aspects of vehicle care, not just oil changes.

I tried to search for something like this but came up empty handed. I remember reading a lot about WASHING the car (esp for the black exteriors) but nothing about the internals.

TIA

check the detailing and automotive care forum. I have made several recommendations and they were probably my posts that you saw regarding the black cars.

Talking Don't let any 23 year olds drive it!

In the "crying thread" 23 year old Okhjoon190 claims he has already blown the engines on two SL55's so I guess the best way to take care of it is to not let any 23 year olds drive it.

I've had mine for about a year and it has been absolutely bullet proof for these 8000 miles.

As far as servicing goes...according to the books its supposed to get serviced every 10K miles and that's just an oil change and some trivial stuff....and it's included in the price of the car!

This is almost maintenance free compared to my Ferraris!

haha yeah i read that too. no laughing matter, that really sucks. I'll try not to drive it when i turn 23

and i have been happy with my sl so far, a lot better than my first mercedes, the C230 which was (and still is) nothing but loads of problems. The brake lights on the C keep burning out! Something about the casing being defective and costing ~500 fix. and i had problems with the 2003 SL500 when there were electrical problems and it took them 3 months to fix which prompted me to get a refund on it and get a SL55 instead.

but so far, besides the fuel tank rattle and some wind noise, everything has been perfect. there were some clicking noises on the front wheels and a burnt out front left marker light but those were fixed within 5 hours, which really impressed me.

i was just asking because i would like to keep the car as problem free as possible (who doesnt?) and also because it got rained on while driving. got caught in a downpour... was so sunny on the east side of oahu and then once i hit H-2 mililani bound there was a tornado and heavy, heavy rain. was blazing through the rain at ~70mph so the rain wouldnt get in but then i hit traffic. people must have thought i was crazy lol.

but the problem is when the seats got wet all the dirt seemed to surface making the interior look a bit black, so i wanted to know the best method of cleaning the seats and dashboard.

AlBoston - didn't even notice the cleaning forum before. I feel really dumb. I read through the sticky's and they are really informative. I will try cleaning the car as posted once I get back home for spring break.

I'd rather change the oil myself, it's just something about being one with the car.. or try to with these Mercedes'.

Its really not funny ... i have had the worst luck with the 55. i have no clue how any of this happened. i have been a mercedes driver since i was 16 and had a 190 e 2.6. then i got a clk320 cab, then a 911 cab for 6 months, then the sl55. i dont wish it upon anyone.

well i couldnt get the leatherique in time (left home for school) so i ended up using lexol.

the dirt on the doors were a b***** and a half to get off. It's still slightly dirty, but looks much better than before. the conditioner put a nice plush feeling to the seats

how often can i use lexol? definitely dont want to ruin the leather.

also anyone know any good bug/tree sap removers? I think I saw a turtle wax brand bug remover. are those any good? TIA
