2004 SL55 will NOT start...
I'm creating a new thread here because the last one had to do with the location of the starter. To summarize:
Went to gas station, turned off the car. It hasn't started again since. I get all of the electronics on and a bunch of things starting up when I turn the key but no crank. So far I have:
Replaced both batteries with OEM
Replaced the starter
Changed the batteries in both remotes
Checked EVERY fuse in all three blocks
Changed the SAM in the driver's side fuse block
Had the OBD read by mechanic, nothing there
Verified voltages everywhere except the starter motor (car has sank to the ground, just feel like giving up so I haven't gone under there)
I've been told it's not the CPS or the EIC. Could it be the grounding strap? Where is that at? Thanks to all for anything you could help me out with.

well, you turn the key on and everything comes on, but in the ign start it doesnt start so the ign switch is bad in that position. it happens all the time. but if you have keyless the key doesnt have to be in at all, and the button wont start it. so that would rule out the ign sw
dont know, have to trace it further, maybe alarm system

Hopefully a semi joke for the following ideas:
You were at a gas station. Did you fill up the car?
If not, could u be out of gas?
If yes, could u have added diesel?
I hope I am both wrong.

There's gas in it. Any idea how I rule out the alarm system? That would be the starter lockout relay, no? If I knew where that was I could jump it out... If it even has one of them.

I just noticed something. I put my key in and turned it to get the windows up and I saw an error message in the dash. It was telling me to make sure that it was in park. I also remembered that the gas cap wouldn't open at the station even though it was in park and shut off. The gas cap opens now, but could it be something with the gear shift? The car doesn't move, so I know the trans is in park but maybe there's a computer problem or the sensor is messed up. Anyone ever heard of this before? Help!

I love working on my cars, but when it gets to be an unsolvable puzzle...... off to the dealer it goes!

If this is true maybe the Park microswitch is not functioning BUT the Neutral is...I'd try to start in "N".

Yeah it might be an issue with the shifter postition switch. Try it in neutral and see if it starts. Also as mentioned, does the dash display change when you move the shifter? Does it shift out of park without you stepping on the brake?

After a ton of troubleshooting, new SAM, new starter, and a boat load of money it turns out that the wire from the terminal block to the starter solenoid grounded out to the engine block. Replaced the purple wire and she started right up. Could've saved thousands if I were to have found this first... Live and learn I guess.
