SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Reason for recall/delay of SL55
t's red faces all round at Mercedes – engineers are going back to the drawing board after they realised the SL55 AMG wasn't as fast as the new hot E-Class. Not yet launched in Britain, the 476bhp supercharged convertible went on sale in Germany in February. Around 100 had been delivered when production was halted for six weeks to uprate engines to 500bhp.
This move ensured the SL55, the flagship of the AMG range, wasn't overshadowed by the next performance E-Class. The E will use the same engine, but as it's lighter and more aerodynamic than the SL, it had proved quicker in testing.

I'm LOL. The sad thing is that by not detuning the W211, and instead squeezing all they could out of the R230AMG, there is not likely to be much more you can get out of the SL55 (not that you would need to) but the E55, will have "room to grow". Be ready for a tuned W211AMG mid-range sedan to come roaring past one of these days....
Yeah how much more HP do you want when you can not let the dog out to run full speed cause you can not keep tires n the 4,000LB Beast!
Heck make it 1,500 HP it still must stay under 200 mph!

The SL is gorgeous and a car to be seen in. It is a fabulous and fast toy, yet it is more practical than many cars in its league.
But in my mind at least, when I think of Mercedes Benz- teutonic cars, built to last and carry their occupants is elegance and safety, swiftly and without attracting too much attention, I think of a sedan, low and powerful. Yes, the new E55Kompressor would do very nicely, very nicely indeed.
