Sticky console buttons?

The three buttons by the center grill speaker lock unlock and hazard I believe are all sticky. I have tried to clean them but it seems like the material itself is somehow breaking down and becoming sticky does anyone else have this problem Or know how to fix this?

Lots of threads on other forums about this with many variations on how to clean.

Personally, I have found carnuba car wax works well in removing the deteriorating ‘soft touch’ factory coating on the buttons. It leaves just the smooth plastic piece. The icons are molded into the button itself and stay intact.

Lol. Just get alcohol pads at pharmacy. My steering wheel buttons were sticky and yellowing. Cleaning with pads made them like new.

Everyone's get sticky. Easy to clean (leather cleaner or any of the other remedies). Also and easy part to replace if you are hell bent on that.

I had "sticky buttons" and purchased a new set to replace over a year ago. I had the car detailed for a show before I installed these new buttons and when I picked the car up, no more sticky buttons!!! So yes, there are ways to clean! I didn't ask how they did it, so I'm of no help here.

But - I now have a extra set of buttons if I ever need to replace

I tried cleaning the buttons with alcohol and goo off. It took the sticky off but it took off all of the black. Now the buttons are white. Does anyone know the part numbers for the three buttons and how to remove and replace them. Thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure you get the right part # to match your interior color. This part number is for Ash (218) interior color.

Thanks. I called the dealer today. They asked for my vin number so they could order the correct part. Now all I have to do is figure out how to replace it in my car.

I remember looking at the instructions and there are pins that need to be depressed in the air vents to remove the cover.

I'll look to find the instructions and post here when found. The parts dealer should be able to print those up for you.

The part number was A2308200010 and then was replaced by part number A2308213451 . Keep in mind that these came in various colors, so you want to use the color code that is correct for your car. I attached a copy of the R and R. the center speaker grill comes out first with careful use of a plastic pry tool.

hope that helps,

Chris

EDIT, I don't know why I did not see that norcalsl55 had already answered this .... curse my semi-functional browser

When I ordered the part from the dealer they asked for my vin number. That way the could get the correct part. I picked up the part today and it is the correct color. Now I just have to work up the nerve to take the SL apart to replace the bad part. Thanks for all the help here on the forum.

the part that has me concerned in the speaker cover. I have taken them out without issue. but I have seen some of these speaker covers that others have removed that suffered minor damage (broken tab) perhaps some cars that have baked in the sun and/or were worked on carelessly ? . I suggest you make sure you have a selection of plastic pry tools AND that you study a picture of the bottom side of the speaker grill before you start (ebay is a good resource for pictures of removed parts)

my $.02

Chris
