sl55 amg limp mode

Under hard accelleration the car goes to limp mode, I read some where that the tps was probably to blame so I Picked up a used gas peddle and changed it out. It didn't fix the problem. there is no check engine light

Check the intercooler pump. You can use a BT OBD2 and an app to monitor intake air temp for clues.

The car is not even close to being warmed up when it fails, I start it cold jab the peddle to the floor real quick and it goes into limp

Ahhhh.....why would you ever do that?

On a serious note plug it into a OBDII reader that works with Mercedes Benz and see what it says. A lot of things can cause these things to go into limp mode. If you have an Advanced Auto(or Autozone) I think they'll hook it up for free and tell you the codes.

Autozone checked it and it was P0123, is there a way to turn that off now that I have replaced the TPS

Did you get a whole new pedal assembly? Some do and some don't. But that detent switch down there goes out. If you research TPS on the forums you'll get lots of solutions. Many have the same issues as yours. Once fixed it should the warning should be gone.

You can also try this..
All auxiliary
systems systems
must be off (radio, lights.aircon, etc) no electrical drains or CAN signals can be triggered during the process.

Turn the Key to the "on" position (the position right before you start your
engine engine
)

Press and hold your gas pedal down for like 5 to 10 seconds

Turn
Key Key
to "off" position (dont remove the
key key
) and then release the gas pedal.
than wait at least 2, if not 3 minutes, for the system to reset.

Though I doubt the later will solve anything but it won't hurt.

I too had this problem. It was the accel pedal assembly. It s an easy fix. 2 bolts and a plug. Done and done - problem solved. This one is a DIY problem.

I believe I'm having this issue in my '03 SL55, but I'm not experiencing any warning symbols/lights. It happens on the highway usually (nut not always) following a heavy acceleration on the on-ramp. I feel like I'm going directly from 500 hp to... 200 hp at most. I can still accelerate, but only barely, and the exhaust gets super quiet.

Should I try replacing the Accelerator Pedal Assembly or the TPS (throttle position sensor)?

Thank you!

You should have someone with proper diagnostic tools plug into that thing!
Maybe find someone in your area that ca do it for you?

Hi compaddict, thank you for the reply.

It's not throwing any warning symbols, though... will a reader still pick up a code?? By the time I slow down to ~20 mph, the problem seemingly resolves itself and I'm good to go again with my 500 hp.

Yes, many codes won't set off a check engine light.

The MB tool shows a plethora of information. So much so that the rule is "clear all codes" then take it for a short drive and then re-read.

Did you just reassembeled, or you had to buy the whole pedal unit?

If it happens every time you hit wide open throttle(pedal to the floor) car goes to limp mode with ESP light then it’s probably your pedal. There is a sensor attached and it’s a full unit. I bought one used on eBay and fixed my problem right away. It only happened when I pushed the pedal all the way to the floor
