SL65 AMG 2005 Cranking but Won't Start

Just got the car back from the dealer in the spring after fixing a constant limp mode problem, which they had the car for over a year... Yes I know, a whole year...

Now in the insane heat of July, we start getting an ABS malfunction, but nothing really comes of it until the beginning of August. We go to start it and it starts, idles rough and stalls immediately upon accelerating, then it will just crank but not start at all. I left it for an hour then came back and all I had was a loud fan, no cranking and ABS & ESP malfunction, noticed the voltage on both batteries was a little low, so I charged them up over the course of a couple nights. Still same problem, did some basic troubleshooting and found that fuse 44 had blown (ECU Power), replaced that now I'm back at cranking but won't start. From what I'm reading it could be the front SAM, ECU or the Crank Position Sensor.

Now where the car is parked in my garage, backing onto a narrow laneway, I can't get it towed out. Is my best bet to replace the CPS and try from there?

Many Thanks

Crank and no fire sounds like a faulty CPS. Can't speak to the other symptoms. Good-luck.

After many hours I seem to be lost, where is the Crankshaft Position Sensor located on this engine?

Alright so $200 later I installed a new CPS and still no fire, still have an ABS/ESP malfunction on the dash. OBD2 reader says no trouble codes and when I've finished cranking I have a very strong smell of gas in the garage.

Any suggestions??

Do you have a star computer? I doubt that regular obd reader will show you all codes.

Could be ignition related i.e. coils or transformer.

Crank but no start even after the CPS was replaced, then i'd check with spark plugs, then check fuel delivery

Fuel pump? I had the same issues last year on my SL55 with 56K miles. Replaced CPS and no joy. Flat bedded to dealer for diagnostic - new fuel pump and filter. Runs great.

The fact that you blew a fuse for the ECU makes me think you have a bad M/E. I'd try to scan it with a real scanner, generic OBD2 readers are not very good with MB's diagnostic system.

Here's a long shot for you. My 2005 4Runner had the same symptoms. In the end, the security system had activated somehow and shut the fuel system down. After replacing the fuel pump, many relays, etc, the fix turned out to be a paperclip in the OBDII port jumping #4 and #13 with the key on for 30 minutes. I turned the key off, pulled the paperclip, and it started.! I found the fix after extensive searches, ending up on Youtube... Yours may be different, but there may be the same type of work around..?

That’s a real long shot, a five year old thread, and comparing a four runner to the SL65.

Why not, Toyota steals everything it can from MB, right down to the styling.?
Besides, my Toyota now runs, and his MB does not..
