As for the SL65, am I the only one who thinks it's yet another uselessly insipid footballer's wife car?

Tez: you thnk the Sl55 sounds good? I dunno man...all the ones I've heard / driven sounded like absolute a$$. No tonality, no development, no nothing. Just grunting crap that sounds like they fuked something up somewhere...like a really bad exhaust leak from an inline 6.

It's for people who want to think that they're driving a sportscar while not spilling their Diet Coke (the one with a twist of lime, of course). How could anyone at MB think that anyone would have fun driving a convertible tank? It's like Brooke Burke wearing a fat suit.
Some people want some luxury with their power. Not everybody once cloth seats, no radio, no carpet, no power windows and a harsh ride when they spend over $100K on a car. The whole point of AMG is you get the incredible power but still a refined car. I guess there is no getting through to some people...
After 3,000 posts and 2.5 years on this board you haven't realized that not everybody wants a supercar?

The whole point of a car line is being able to cater to a bunch of different markets. MB doesn't seem to give a crap about people who want to enjoy driving their cars, instead of being seen in them. What would be wrong with an AMG "club" version that had a manny, start off with less equipment standard, and concentrate on better handling? I don't see why that should offend you.
MB's gonna keep losing sales that they could easily get by tweaking the lineup, imho.
Now for the SL65, just because it is heavy does not mean it could not handle well and perform well, if the suspension was setup more aggressively. But then we go back to them leaving that MB luxury feel in the car instead of making it hold the road like it was on rails. AMG needs to step away from luxury and go to driving enjoyment instead. Or at least the option for a more highly sport tuned suspension.
MB will market towards people who look for MB/AMG products and what they offer.
BMW will market towards people who look for BMW/M products and what they offer.
Stop comparing. If it was the same options with AMG & M there would be no competition between the two and what they can do and offer.

The thing is that you're not right - you can equip a BMW comparably to an AMG, you just can't do the opposite, which is a shame.
Yes, Mom.

possibly in equipment you can come close to one another, BUT what I meant was in term of drivability, ride, handling, etc etc etc, it's just DIFFERENT. Everyone is looking for something different, hence some people go for AMG and some go for M.
Don't
at me son, you'll get a backhand
you can't compare the two...its comparing apples to oranges. The two are totally different car's going towards different types of people.

Then I guess that every car mag is totally off-base when they get around to doing their C32 to M comparo? Could you two at least agree to the fact that some people, when car shopping, drive both cars? Same with E class/5 series and S/7 series? Geez, give me something here. Things can be comparable while being different, you know. Otherwise, they'd be called "identical".
Bring it on!

I guess what i'm trying to say is that they are two different cars in that each have their own strong points and weaknesses, but appeal to a certain type of buyer looking for those pros and cons.
I think Mercedes Benz is well aware of the sales that they are not getting by not offering a more "sporty" version of the AMG. My guess (and only a guess here) is that they have consciously made the decision to go after the more luxury orientated customer with their AMG products than the sporty ones. Yes, they are perhaps losing sales to BMW and others which do offer more "sport", but they probably feel that it is the best decision in which to grow their brands; MB and AMG.
