Poor summer performance...Torque Pro app? Water pump?

I have an ‘03 SL55 AMG. I am convinced the car is not running properly. Dealer of course says it’s running great. I tried the Torque Pro app so that I could get some air fuel ratio info, but it doesn’t appear to give any data. Has anyone used this app in order to obtain any performance info... specifically AFR?

The car seems to run much better / more responsive when the outside temp is cooler. In the heat, it seems to run like a slug. I did a quick 0-60 test using the app and it was terrible... like 7.9 seconds.

Thanks,

Matt

Check your Intercooler pump. If not working properly, your car will be a gutless wonder. First rendition pump has lead many to up grade from the original Bosch xxxxxxx03 pump to the 0392022010 pump. The part number is on the pump and you can check it with relative ease - its under the bumper in front of the passenger side front tire.

Any suggestions on how to check to see if it’s the IC pump? Btw, I took a screen shot of some of my idle stats from my dash command trial.... I have no error codes, btw (aside from that damn SOS error that cant be removed)

Wow 187F intake temp... Your intercooler pump is toast... Get the bosch 010 replacement pump. Will feel like a new car again.

Looks like they’re pretty cheap nowadays... just over a hundred bucks. I’ll get one and try to install it myself. Not gonna waste anymore money with the dealer. Apparently I have a current drain from my rear battery as well ... I could only imagine how much it would cost to have them track that down!

pretty sure I saw some instructions in the forums regarding replacing the IC pump. I’ll give an update when replaced.

One quick question regarding the new pumps connector. I’ve read conflicting info whether it is plug and play or whether I need an adapter?

Thanks.

Intake was staying down near the 150’s on normal driving. Did a couple more 0-60 runs. Was able to record a 5.4. Now my intake temp is sitting at over 210 degrees. It should’ve dropped back down after running the car hard, right?

Yep, pump is likely toast assuming there's coolant in there and its been reasonably bled.

You can check the fuse for good measure but it's probably the pump.

I would swap the pump out, its cheap and if its original I can almost guarantee its isn't performing at peak. It inexpensive and an easy swap.

Also AFR's can really only be monitored with a dual wideband sensor connected to a data logger or display to see any kind of accuracy. Also AFR's usually don't get messed up unless you load a tune or have some other major issues going on.

I replaced the pump this afternoon. Seems to have improved performance so far. I didn’t have the chance to really drive it around too much yet. The intake temp seems to still be in the 130’s while cruising. I was expecting it to be a lot lower. But maybe the temp isn’t the whole story... I’ll need to ride it hard and see if it keeps running good.

A second thing I noticed, was the new pump’s vacuum hose connector does not have hole in it. Not sure if that’s by design or if the unit I have is defective. The original vacuum connector has a hole in the middle. Anyone know what’s up with the new pump? Vacuum hose may as well be disconnected.

***** edit **** All photos I’ve viewed show the vacuum connector just as my unit is... no hole. I guess they did away with it.

Thanks,

matt

Looks like the pump fixed a lot of my performance issues. On a cool 76 degree morning, my intake temp stayed around 110 after getting on it. Not sure if my timing advance is correct, but I’ll start a new performance thread. These are my numbers cruising at 55mph.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Looking good! The negative timing is just the logger's way of saying BTDC.

See this thread. The vacuum hose was connected to the rear of the 03 pumps and isn't required on the 010 pumps. You can still place the hose on the back of the pump, don't know what this hose does...

So, it seems i have a new issue. Now, when the engine is cold, the car hesitates/bucks. It was really bad this morning, as the outside temp was only 68. When it was still 90 out, it didn't do it. Once i start driving and the engine warms up, the bucking stops. I still think the car can be quicker and accelerate smoother. I'm thinking fuel pump and filter? Does that sound like the likely culprit? I have no engine codes.

Thanks,

Matt
