what makes sl so good
i'm about to get a sl and it's not gonna be here for another two months so meanwhile i am wondering what makes sl such a glamorous, attractive car to u . i guess in order words, what do u like about ur sl.

2003 SL55
I love all the return trips to the dealer for repairs. I love when they have this sorry faces and apologised to me "We are sorry about all the trouble you went through, thank you for being so patient with us". It makes me feel so special!!

ps : bbjai, i still love my SL, an absolute head turner. nothing comes close to this car in term of pure class (esp in my home town in australia)

What I like on my SL
The SL is (for me) the perfect combination of a sport car, coupe & roadster, a possible everyday driver ( even he is waiting for me during the week in the garage) and reliable. There is enough comfort in driving slow AND fast as well.
It is possible in terms of luggage to leave for a weekend trip - and rides of a few hundred miles are not that difficult. ( Try this with a 360 Modena or another sports car... )
Of course, everybody experienced some troubles with his beloved SL, but love is to forgive as well - right ??

I think Walter has it right. The SL, even in AMG form, is not a pure sports car. But it can behave like one and can be very pleasing to drive. You give up some of the immediacy of a dedicated sports car to gain luxury features. My favorite things about the car is how it can be a luxo crusier in one moment and a sports car the next- and that can be as a coupe or roadster- all at my desire. How can you not love this. So while the SL is not a track car, I think of it as a swiss army knife.

I'm jealous of you guys who can drive and baby an SL!!!! I saw a black SL55 AMG today (rare sight) and it's during the welcoming party of olympic atheletes (just before the atheletes came, tons of people already gather alongside the road), all eyes on it hehehe.

The SL55 Rocks!
I have had alot of cars and the SL55 is by far the best all 'rounder that I have.
I like it for it's ability to do the normal stuff...
it has been a great trip car...
a great mountain road car...
a more than adequate track car...
and since it has been derestricted....a crushing top speed of 202-3mph

2005 SL55

Why the Sl? I think it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made. My first was a 2003 Sl 500 that died three times in less than 3000 miles. During one of those visits to the shop I bought an S 55 and was captivated with the power. The Sl 500 felt like a slug compared to the S 55 so I went to the Porsche dealer to trade the problematic Sl for a new 997 Porsche. A disappointment for sure... the S 55 would run circles around the Porsche and the Sl looked better by far than the 911. So... dummy boy that I am I bought a 2005 Sl 55 and three days later I take the S 55 back to the shop because when it rains the interior lights fill up with water. This whole experience shows my ignorance, stupidity and stuborness at its best. I have two 493 horsepower problems and thank God I'm not married.

It's an all-rounder
A previous poster summed it up best: it's both a luxo cruiser and a high performance sports car. Sit in a Viper , Porsche TT, or Z06 after driving the SL55 and they feel like a plastic noise maker. And with the exception of the 996+ Porsche, if you're a remotely average-skill driver the SL55 will probably outperform all of its performance competitors.
Drive an XK8 or Vantage and they are only slightly better as luxo cruisers, but feel like gargantuan land yachts on the performance side.
The NSX and Ferarri 360 spider are the closest competitors but the interiors aren't quite there and the daily driveability is a bit rough. The 575 is entirely superior if you don't care about having a drop top, but not 2.5X better. All in all, if the difference between 100k and 250k is at all meaningful to you then the SL55 is far and away the best car in its price class. If money and the convertible top mean nothing to you then get a Ferarri 575.
