Fitting CL or S65 wheels on SL65

Hi. I’ve had so much trouble and frustration with my aftermarket 20” wheels (damaged and destroyed 3 fronts in 3 years specifically) that i’d like to move to two piece OEM wheels, 19” front and back (although i’d prefer 20” on rear)

from my research it seems similar period S65 has same size wheels but offsets are 44 front and 60 rear that would likely require spacers.

is anyone running these wheels on their SL65? if so what spacers? looks like from my calculation fronts will fit but rears will need something like a 20 or 30mm spacer.

an update here i’ve purchased a set of OEM 2 piece 19” wheels but found one of the rears has a crack.

i was able to source a rear 10” wheel to replace it but my other wheel is 9.5” wide

they should be able to fit the same size tire so i believe i will be alright.

TLDR: fronts are the same width, rears are .5” different curious if anyone thinks i’ll have trouble here i think it’ll be ok assuming same tire size

If the offset is very close then having the same tire on a 10" and 9.5" wheel probably won't be unsafe at sedate cruising speeds. At *****-out edge-of-control driving the tires may behave differently enough to cause loss of control. Compliance and therefore tread contact may differ on different width wheels. I don't think running 2 different wheel widths, even this close, is a very good idea.

If the offset is substantially different then one wheel/tire is going to be positioned differently than the other with respect to the center of the car. This is a recipe for disaster and is a very, very bad idea. Things like lane changes at highway speeds are potential loss of control actions. And by substantially different I mean an inch or more. Probably look pretty goofy, too.

i’ve input the values across both wheels into an offset calculator

it looks like the difference between the 0.5in wider wheel is below i think the variance on same size tires is likely fine for the driving i’ll be doing. if trying to drive 120+ i’ll probably hold off until i have matching wheels.

Inner Clearance: 3.35mm or 0.13in less
Outer Position: extend by 9.35mm or 0.36in

It’s not only the offset, but the larger wheel may actually make the tire a smaller diameter, simply because it’s wider. I think it’s silly you are going to do this on a 500 plus horsepower car, and ask if it’s a good idea, it’s not.

diameter is the same as both wheels are 19” tires would be the same size too.

i’ve already tested this on my front wheels because my 20” aftermarket wheels were not available in the same exact width so one was 9” and the other 9.5” front wheels were off by 0.5” for about 6 months before one of them was again damaged in the crappy roads of new york. tires the same size which is the most important imo. no control issues

i don’t push the car to 200mph+ i’m just trying to be able to drive rather than not able to drive at all.. i’ve gone through three 20” aftermarket wheels so far owning this car in 4.5 years

that’s part of why i’m sizing back down to 19”. thanks for your concern however i appreciate it

I sure wouldnt be mismatching wheels or tires on one of these cars. The wheels are to readily available and cheap. And I wouldn't be putting 20 + spacers on them.

What's the problem with spacers? If a wheel with a spacer has the same total offset as the OEM wheel then nothing is effectively different. The forces acting upon the mounting are the same, the edges (both inside and outside) of the wheel/tire are in the same place with respect to the mounting surface. I agree that if the effect of a spacer is to substantially decrease the offset which is moving the wheel/tire out from the mounting surface there will be problems, bearing wear among them. But a wheel/spacer combination that results in the same position of the wheel as OEM is not going to be any different in any way from OEM.

Watching this tread as I am considering the same .... Jumping in here with this option to see if they would work on my 2009 SL63, offsets very close

The rear should be no problem, offset is 3mm greater and width is the same as stock so the wheel will be a very small amount inboard, probably not perceptible.

The front has a 5mm greater offset and an inch greater width. This will put the inside of the wheel about 11 mm closer to the suspension/chassis/body, almost half an inch. I have no idea if this is a problem but it needs checking or verifying, maybe by someone with actual experience with this configuration. Hard to measure as you need to have full suspension travel through full steering angle to make sure no contact at any point.

Hi friends i managed to snag a set of these wheels (CLS wheels PN 211400XXX) and put them on my car. Looks great with 19”s again and as i understand the two piece amg wheels are somewhat rare.

some curb rash to clean up but overall i am very happy with the result. i’ll upload a photo this weekend. 😎
