SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Car shuts and has to be restarted constantly

Car shuts and has to be restarted constantly

Driving along sudden loss of engine and have to shift to neutral and restart her. Happens more and more frequently till had to stop driving. Almost like battery terminal loose. No warning or error messages. Any ideas?
2011 sl63. Head bolts replaced.

This really could be numerous problems, but battery terminals and crank position sensor are the first that come to mind. The CPS usually fails when hot and won’t allow restart though. If you have limited mechanical skills, a specialist is your best bet.

Crank position sensor is common for this kind of symptom but can be other issues , like fuel too. I scanner can help you isolate quickly vs changing out parts.

My Indi wants to keep the car for a few days and run it with a fuel sensor attached. Replaced the CPS just to check - no change. Its now with dealer to reflash the entire car to latest/last, as a first step.

ECL, not necessarily.. But as you said it will shut off, I had this issue after I upgraded my fuel pump. The mechanic bent the fuel line while installing the new pump so there was a fuel starvation. So Before you going any deeper start with the fuel system

Porsche guy who drives SL63 w/ perf pkg AND perf suspension
could be some fault with the auto start/stop feature

Well, both my indi and dealer could not find any fault nor recreate the issue, so I'll start driving her again tomorrow and see if the re-flash made any difference, though I still suspect electrical at the ignition end or fuel as suggested. This issue is a PITA though.,

I am just guessing but if there are no events recorded by the computer then maybe the car thinks it is supposed to shut down. So from that perspective I would look at EIS.

Nothing for 2 weeks then started again, sgut diwn 5 times on way hoe, 4 times going fast enough to force a restart, once after stopping at lights where it was resistant to re-start.. finally got her home and 10 minutes later the alarm went off, which would not stop till I put key in ignition.

One dealer mechanic thought it may be a loose wire/short on the push start/stop button on the transmission stick. It did have trouble starting after we stopped at the lights, no crank, but a few shifts neutral to Park and she got going again. I think it HAS to be the ignition system/key interface module. Each time it shuts down there is a squeak from dash, followed by all the dash lighting up. Still no CEL.

I had a similar issue and in my case if was the crank position sensor located at the back of the engine. A bit of a pain to get to but a fairly easy change to do. Helps if you have small hands. I had my 11 year old help me out. Your symptoms were exactly as you described. It would just shut off at random. I had around 50k on my car when it happened. Hasn't occurred since.

Hmm, one of the first things I did was to replace the CPS, did not stop the problem, however, driving with the key in the ignition instead of using the push start/stop, so far all normal, which takes me back to maybe a loose connection within the S/S button.

And so it seems to be the start/stop button on the shifter that is at fault. With key in ignition I have not had a single event and have been using her that way for the last 6 weeks.
