What Multiple Vehicle Combo Could Possibly Replace Your SL55/SL65/SL600?

Hey guys/gals:

Do you ever wonder from time to time what you would do if you could have 2 or 3 vehicles to replace with your SL55/SL65/SL600? I'm curious!

I sometimes think that even though my SL55 AMG is a great vehicle at the top of it's class, what would it be like trading it in and having multiple vehicles in it's stead. What would you own to create the proverbial "parts are greater than the whole" to create a better driving experience?

For me, after coming back from the CA. International Auto show in Anaheim:

2006 Infiniti M45 Fully-loaded and the 2006 Chevrolet C6 Z06
OR
2005 Mercedes E55 AMG and 2005 Lotus Elise
OR some combination above.

Obviously, we're not referring to other vehicles you may already own in addition to your SL.

What combination of vehicles could equal/almost equal/surpass the driving experience of owning just one SL55/SL65/SL600 for you?

Ooh, interesting!

I'm in a lowly 55, so I'm not sure it's possible to match the overall package in budget. Maybe an Acura NSX for the performance car side, plus an Infiniti Q45 for the luxry cruiser? Hmmn, no convertible in there, though. Maybe it should be an M3 convertible plus a used 7-series beemer.

The porsche boxster S and Range Rover would definitely match on performance and luxury, but I find the boxster boring.

Ooh, or what about a Jag XKR and a Land Rover LR3? That might be best of all.

Any other ideas?

Paul

Yes, an interesting question which underlines what an incredible all-rounder the SL is. Thing is, if you want a convertible, there isn't one made which matches the SL, so the SL would always have to be part of the stable, which sort of breaks your rule.

The SL doesn't provide it all though, so I'd identify 3 cars to have in addition:

- A BMW M5 Touring (if they ever make it) to meet the requirement to be able to carry loads and give more than one passenger a white knuckle ride

- A Ferrari F430 to satisfy my enjoyment of a pure driving experience, or a Lotus Elise as a close alternative.

- A Range Rover because it's so politically incorrect here now.

Notice the DB9 doesn't figure. Now that my SL55 has had its creaking roof and brakes fixed, I'm thinking that other being a much better car to look at on the outside, it's too close to the SL55 to make me buy. Next Friday I'm test driving one so we'll see.

That F430 is sexy sweet. I haven't owned a Ferrari before but from what I keep hearing from all of the guys that used to own modified 996TTs and have moved to the Ferrari CS, it's a living dream. The pure driving experience is highly appealing as well as the sports luxury. I love the passionate styling over the 360 Modena. When I have an opportunity in the future (prices drop a bit on the high demand/ very low supply mark-ups and lightly-used), I would like to own a F430 as a long-time keeper.

You're right. On FerrariCHAT, it's a uniform consensus that the new front air ducts should have been designed to be less prominent. Also, and I agree, the non-grill areas as well as the central front diffuser inlet would look much better painted in body color. This would visually minimize the duct size.

I think the styling of the F430 is much sharper than the "blobby" F360. Great car.

You can see that my Ferrari will soon be 10 years old. No matter, it's still the greatest drive I have. There isn't the same pressure to constantly upgrade as there is for SL500 owners moving to an SL600 or SL55 owners moving to an SL65. The Ferrari hits the spot and you just enjoy it. It stands apart from other cars.

That's why I mentioned that I would keep an F430 for a long time because the Ferrari will look timeless. I don't feel that the exterior design of the F430 makes the 360 Modena look out-dated and the same for the F355. I especially like the Foriano F355. It seems like they are just different levels of driving experiences that can still hold their own regardless if the next generation makes more hp and tq. It's much like the 911 design from the 993 to the 996 to the 997 but the each Ferrari generation is better-focused on feeling performance and are more special than their contemporary competitors.
