Chrome on an SL55?

I was at the dealer yesterday and noticed that the SL600 has a chrome plated grill and was wondering if anyone has done the conversion on an SL55. I have distronic if it matters. I forgot to check if the "side vents" and "hood vents" where chrome as well. Also, where is the best place to buy the new AMG 19" SL65 style wheels/tires w/ silver centers. The dealer offered a set to me for $5380.00, but tire rack is the only other place that I saw them. Thanks in advance and I will work on a more creative post next time.

I bought the 19" SL65 wheels almost 2 years ago from a guy in Opa Locka named Ernie's Alloys and it was $3500 i think for the swap. Call information to get the number. The thing is that the wheels i bought dont have the gunmetal color in the middle, but im sure he can get those for you.

Those were the genuine AMG Style IV's you bought yeah? Hopefully they are or you may have paid too much otherwise it was good deal. I have the standard finish Style IV replicas, same model as the ASA's that tirerack sell. They set me back the equiv. of $US1150 and the Pzero Rosso's were $US2500. Unfortunately there aren't any replicas out just yet. Mind you I'm not a fan of the gun metal on my black car, I prefer the contrast of the normal Style 4 against the black body.

Actually looking at your photos, those are the same replicas as mine. The way to spot them is the is the reps have the MB star in the center and the AMG's don't:
.

Actually, the reps sell for $249 ea. 8.5" front and $259 ea. for 9.5" rear from Tirerack. I double checked what I paid for mine and it was actually $US996 all up, slighty less even than Tirerack. Therefore, my all up package cost $US3496. From you photo you also got only the 19x8.5 fitment all around which you can see from my bad mobile phone taken photo when you look at mine that the 9.5 rim is deeper to accomodate the 295's:
.

I hate to say it, but it looks like your friend at Ernie's got a nice set of genuine stock rims from you for nix actually...unless you didn't mean you traded them when you said swap...

If he sold me replicas, he is going to pay hell. He is a reputable guy, does alot of business with MB dealers and Porsche dealers. He preaches OEM wheels until you are tired of hearing it....for warranty purposes. I have seen the same rims at MB dealers and they look exactly the same. Some have been 18".

There is an SL55 for sale on my local MB dealers floor which is owned by a guy who distributes geniune AMG wheels here, he has a set of Style IV's on it. I can tell you that they do not have the three pioint star in the middle, just the AMG stamp offset a few inches from the blank centers. There are are plenty OEM models and sizes that feature the star but it is not a feature of the AMG Styles IV's. For the most part AMG's have the AMG logo instead of the star to differentiate them as an AMG line product (throwback from when AMG was a separate company). The replicas feature the star because they have to be different enough to be allowed to be sold legally.

In the US, the AMG Style IV's come with the offset AMG stamp near the lugs, and the three-pointed star in the center cap.

Some AMG cars feature Style IV wheels in 18" as standard fitment (CL55) as well as other AMG models from the factory that do include the star in the center. However, any aftermarket order for non-OEM AMG model wheels, notably the Style IV 19" the star is absent. So unless the the wheels came off a car delivered with them or an MB dealer was able to order an OEM set directly, you wouldn't get the star.

They only true way to know at the end of the day is by the presence of the AMG stamp...

Actually the originals do come with the MB star center cap.

The SL's are original, the one from my car is a replica.

If you read my last post, what I state is that cars fitted with AMG wheels from the factory have the star. Also, the car you have shown is a european delivery SL55 with the F1 safety car option pack, which includes the style IV 19's and goes with what I said about factory delivered cars having the star. Genuine AMGs ordered from aftermarket sources ie. tirerack.com, do not...

BTW, your reps are more along the lines of the C32 style IV's.

Does the center circle "pop out"?? I bought some Porsche Carrera Cup replica wheels and the center cap could be replaced with a factory center cap.

Could possibly be the case, I am tempted to look next time I go down to the dealership...

Yes the center cap is removable, and yes tirerack ship the wheels with the MB center cap. As a matter of fact I have them all, the standard star (signature picture), the one posted in the picture above and the amg center caps.

Your's AMG center cap are good but I never saw it before, just for the hood but never for the wheels.

The C32's are different as per the picture, the ones I have are exactly the same as the SL55.

Sorry man, but yours aren't exactly the same as the SL55, not by a ways. Compare these pics:

I stand corrected (while gritting teeth slightly) on what I said about the SL55 in the local dealership not having the star center caps on it. I swung by today and checked, and sure enough the bloody things were there. I must have had a flashback to tireracks photos after the first time I'd seen them the first time.

I now go back to my other comment as the sole means of telling the difference, the AMG stamp on the geniune Style IV's.

Alright, mine are 18"s, yours are 19"s therefore your spokes are a little straight, but the point was that mine don't look at all like the C32's, by the way tirerack will ship the wheels with the MB center cap of your choice, that's how I got mine.

Is that a magnified pic of my SL55's wheels which i posted in this thread a couple of days ago?

https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-sl63-amg-sl65-amg-r230/97369-my-morning-dealer-some-pics.html

If so, it has the AMG stamp near the center which you just stated means it is NOT a replica. So which is it, are my wheels replicas or not? Maybe ill reread this thread again.

There you go. I was trying to work out why the looked different, probably clutching at straws suggesting the C32's. I nearly suggested they were 18"s , except that you stated that they were exactly the same as the SL55's which would mean 19"s ( I even tried to read the tire size off your side walls). That's good that tirerack give you the choice, I'd feel a little ripped off if they didn't.

Most definitely not, but I'd love to have the software that could magnify jpegs that well, maybe the military or CSI do . It's actually a shoddy picture from my nokia phone taken at the dealership last Sat. I looked at that other shot of your car on the other thread which shows the car side on. It's still a bit too far away, however I can't discern the AMG stamps at all.
