2003 SL55 2007 S550
A couple of comments.....
1) A woman I know that has sold Mercedes for many years predicted that the price of the V12's would drop much faster than the V8's. She says that has been a known pattern for years and that the pattern would hold with the AMG's.
2) As interesting as the 65 is I always thought its price/performance was not that great, where the 55 is actually priced very attractively when you consider what you get for the money (engine, top, luxury, etc.). It holds its own against competitors for the price/performace.
3) Even with expensive cars price/performance cannot be ignored.

As with most very expensive cars, the resale sucks. Most people that would buy a used SL65 at this point probably have the money to buy a new one so unless it is a significant savings it isn't worth it to them. I think this is true about most cars with the exception of the new Ferrari V8's. The 360's and now the 430's can be bought and driven and sold for sticker or better for a while.

If you didn't get killed with import duty, there could be a business opportunity selling SL65s in PR and Australia

I'm in India on business right now, and a SL500 costs over $220k here. I've only seen one. Even the models "made in India" (C, E, S class) cost 50% over what the U.S. prices would be.
C180 CDI and C 220 cost $50k. SCARY.

No opportunity in Oz - the sales tax increases markedly over a certain threshold and that's going to kill you however you sell the car. We've been saying on this board for a long time that the V12's are going to take the biggest hit - was the case with the previous generation, is the case with Aston Martin (DB7, Vanquish, probably also the DB9 once demand settles) and Ferrari (456, 550, 575) so no reason to believe the SL600 and especially the SL65 will be any different. Added to that, most reviews of the SL65 I've read think there's too much power for the traction available and it's even heavier than the SL55. I'm just not interested. Now an F430, that's interesting.

You guys are all very lucky my friends.
In Malaysia, an SL65 would cost RM2,100,000 which is the equivalent of US$550,000 (300% import duties)
In Brunei, an SL65 would cost around B$470,000 which is the equivalent of US$280,000
All these are montrous prices over here. Sometimes its really sad to know others could get such good cars at 1/3 of your price.
Imagine a person who can own a CL65 here can own an Enzo in the states . (I assume Enzo is US550,000)

Enzos are going for a cool 1 million here in the states....that's if you can find one. There were 2 on ebay this week. One did NOT sell with a maximum bid of about $950,000. The other had a minimum bid of $1,095,000 but noone bid on it. Both cars were in California.

Ah my fault, Doctodd. I last read from a magazine many months ago that it was going for US550,000. The exclusiveness of the car must have change the whole market situation for Enzo.
At that price, it is competing with the Mclaren F1! Enough said.

Here are the links to the BASE cost of a SL55 and the 65 as well in Australia.
http://www.mercedesbenz.com.au/defau...bridgeclass=sl
http://www.mercedesbenz.com.au/defau...bridgeclass=sl
I own a SL55 and a Lamborghini Gallardo in the US and the 55 cost about 130-140USD and the Gallardo about 170-180USD.
As you can see the 35% luxuary tax hikes the price for the Mercedes big time.
If you bought the same cars in Australia the cost for some reason is very close...I wonder why the gap closed compared to the US.
A full spec SL55 will run you to 450K AUD and a Gallardo would come in about the same....not a 25% difference like here.

I agree....we have cars on the cheap here in the US. I was on vacation in the Philippines over the holidays and checked out an SL55 there. The sticker was $250k! A C240 was almost $70k. The outrageous price is caused by very high import taxes.
