SLR vs SL65 Black?

SLR vs SL65 Black in a straight drag what will the outcome look like?

I crunched some numbers and the SLR is about 6.31 pounds per HP and the Black is about 6.08 pounds per HP
(I calculated this from 617 HP SLR @ 3898 and Black 670HP @ 4080)
The HP is close but I know if I did the same for TQ the outcome would be much different)

I still somehow think the SLR might be faster
Maybe I hold the SLR up to high, I tend to thinks its God's car.

Online I cant find to much information. I though for sure there would be some guy in Dubai who posted a video on youtube of his Black vs SLR that he took on his cell but no luck!

Does anyone know the 0-100 0-150 0-180 times of the pair or better yet know of a video?

Thanks Kevin

Off topic, but wtf is it with those rich *****s from Dubai in their 6 digit cars recording races off a throw back 20 buck cell phone? You figure they'd be able to afford a cell phone capable of recording more then snow ridden images...

Your worst nightmare...
I would give the advantage to the SLR, it is a feather weight compared to the Black series IMO

As for the race, I'd say the Black.

So far we have 1 for the SLR and 1 for the black, im still in the middle.

Do you guys ever remember seeing a recent Car and Driver mag with a group test of the lp640, ZR1, the Black and some other cars? Car and Driver have pretty indepth acceleration tests. Does anyone have this mag?

Car magazines in all honesty are worthless. Especially Car and Driver, The best they mustered if I remember correctly was high 11s out of the ZR-1/SL Black, who are they kidding? Both of those cars are low 11 second cars. Easily.

I have the mag, it's a 640, ZR1, Black, and Viper.

I'll get the numbers from it later, but like the guy before me said, it is Car & Driver, the BMW obsessed magazine.

Yes most mag's are all over the place when it comes to times however
I have always thought the opposite from Car and Driver. They use very accurate measuring systems and have decent drivers. I think they ran hight 11's because it was in "real world' conditions not on a prepared track.

Back on topic, The SLR is 11.5 correct? I have read it could do much better but the TCU limits TQ in 1st and 2nd. Is this the same in the SL Black?

We never left the topic, simply we said the magazine times aren't to be trusted. Until someone takes a Black to a proper track and runs it, we will never know what it can do. I would venture a guess, from looking at tuned SL65s (chipped) pushing out roughly the same amount of power as the Black, that a track the SL Black (weighing less then its sister) should be able to run low 11s high 10s. Chipped 65s go low 11s all day, so a lighter SL with the same power should be faster... all in theory of course.

Thanks Esh,
Looking forward to seeing the numbers and finding out who would win this dream showdown!

BTW in regards to "BMW obsessed magazine" ill never forget the issue "The King is Dead" where the G37 beat out the 335i for top sport coupe! I was in shock to say the least! lol

According to Car & Driver:

MB SL65 AMG Black Series

661 hp @ 5400 rpm
738 tq @ 2200 rpm

6.4 lb/hp

0-60 - 3.6
0-100 - 7.6
0-140 - 15.0

1/4 - 11.7@126mph

Rolling 5-60 - 4.0
30-50 - 2.0
50-70 - 1.9

Braking 70-0: 152ft
Roadholding: 0.93g

Comparably, the 1/4 mile times for the ZR1 (11.7@127), Viper SRT10 (11.8@128), and the LP640 (11.5@127).

In the article it doesn't seem like C&D can decide if they truly like the car or not. They place it 3rd, only beating out the Viper.

From MotorTrend I have found on the SLR

test data
acceleration, sec to mph
0-30 1.7
0-40 2.2
0-50 2.9
0-60 3.6
0-70 4.4
0-80 5.2
0-90 6.3
0-100 7.6
1/4 mile, sec @ mph 11.6 @ 127.2

The 0-60 and 0-100 are both the same according to the mags.

I wish MotorTrend would show 0-140 like C&D does as both of these cars are just getting into stride at these speeds.

What will happen at 100MPH plus with these 2 cars?

The SL65 AMG BS was slowest from 0-140 in the C&D test when compared to the ZR1 (14.0 seconds), SRT10 (14.2 seconds), and LP640 (14.0 seconds), although it was fastest from 30-50 and 50-70.

Wow! I was not expecting that. That ZR1 is really something!

There has to be high speed (140 plus) data on the 65 Black somewhere.

I have just found 0-180 MPH on the Mcmerc
Mercedes SLR does it in 28 secs

if only we knew how long it took the Black to reach that speed we might have found our anwser?

I'm an SLR fanatic so I would like the SLR to win, but I think the SL65 BS would actually beat the SLR at top speeds. There was a video on youtube between SLR and a regular SL65 at high speeds, and the SL65 started passing the SLR at some point. Now if you consider the extra power of the SL65 Black Series and less weight, I believe the V12 twin turbo will shine even more at higher speeds.

Is this it?

Only reason I could see the SLR holding off the SL Black at these speeds might be aerodynamics? What do you guys think?

I think it's a fake video. Staged. The SL starts walking away from the higher hp'd, lighter SLR.

I've actually seen a couple of more videos with the same result. The V12 starts to unleash real power at high speeds and it can maintain those higher speed much easier and probably much longer than the maxed out V8.

No, it was another one with much higher quality and not so dark, but thanks for posting that one..... I will look for the other one and try to post it as well

Are we talking SLR 722 GT?

If so, then don't respond! Some things are better off not knowing!!

H*ll no..... I was just referring to a standard SLR, not even a 722 let alone a 722 GT The 722 GT would rape a black series

That's what I thought!!
I can see the SL65 Black beating a standard SLR, but not the SLR 722/GT series.

I look forward to see how my 5.7L Kompressor compares to modded 65's!!
Long live the 55K!!
