Wheel/tire options

So... I have 16" OEM wheels on right now and one of them has some bubbling and discoloration towards the center of the wheel. Local dealership says that it's not covered under warranty cuz it looks like it was scratched. I disagree, but not fighting it... yet.
I've been looking to replace them with some 17" wheels and have a few questions.

What happens if I go with a set of 17 AMG 170's from a C-class- all the same size- with 225s on them? How does this affect the handling of the car, not having the current staggered wheel/tire sizes?

Are there any advantages to aftermarket wheels and if so, can anyone recommend brands to avoid or look for?

Is there any way to reasonably refinish one or all of the current OEM 16" wheels? Can they be polished? The dealer said that repainting just one would make it noticably different from the others. Might it be worth fighting them to put that wheel under warranty? (I can provide pics if anyone is interested)

Any other options?

Thanks!

Would you be interested with 17" staggered AMG wheels and tires off SLK350? I might sell this set if the price is right. They had less than 150miles only and the tires are Continental ContiSport2 (225/45front and 245/40rear). PM me if you wanna talk more about this

Thanks

I've seen people mention wheel repair services for curbing/bent rims. Yours should be easy since it's just problems w/the paint and not the rim itself.

It's just paint/clearcoat. You should be able to match it pretty well. In fact, they may only have to use colored paint over the discoloration. The rest will probably be clearcoated.

I'm just guessing however. Call around and find out.

Trident, 225x45/17's work great on an SLK 230 ...

They fit like their supposed to. They balance the car nicely.
As to wheels, be careful if you are looking at TSW wheels. I had a set, they were so thin they caused vibration at certain speeds, and the speed could be changed by a change in tire pressure. That's not good.... :-)

Normally a variable speed vibration is the tyre NOT the rim. The belt layering gets a harmonic that changes with pressure.

Bazzle, you could be right, however...

I put the same tires on a set of Monoblock I rims and the vibration was no longer there at any speed. I could only agree with the guys I autocross and track with, that the problem was with the wheels.
It could very well be, and likely was a combination of the tires, wheels, and suspension that set up a unique vibration.

I don't know why actually. Has it got ESP? Or just ASR? Since the perimiter of the wheel probably only differ a few mm (fractions of an inch) compared to the previos set of wheels, it shoudln't be enough to make the car think that there's something wrong. Did they give you an explenation of why your 19"-rims/wheels would be the reason for this or they left it at "it's not possible"?

I had a similar problem with another car when I put bigger rims on it. The abs and trac light came on and they said the sensor went out. They told me it wasn't because of the rims but I am sure that it was..... but it could of just been a conisidence just like what happened to you.

Seeing as wheel overall diameter front to rear is within 1% I cant see why dealer says that?

Try the following one at a time
1. Turn steering wheel all the way left to rught and hold on each end for 5 seconds.
2. Remove neg batt terminal for 30 minutes
3. Check sensors on each wheel are properly in place AND that tone ring teeth are clean.

Also check brake lights making good contact in the housings, known fault area.
With battery you will need your Radio code.

Add your location etc to your sig or Avatar? Sydney Oz?

Back on track

I have on my 1998 SLK230 4 of 8x17 AMG4 copies with 225/45/17.
Car appears to handle and ride very nicely.
Also allows me to swap front to rear to help even out wear.
I believe MB made some sport models with the same combination?

Sounds like absolute garbage and that the dealer is making excuses because they dont actually know what is causing the fault.

I run 20s and have never had a problem.

Print this picture, take it to the dealer and tell them they are full of *****.
