My husband who owns a 2001 6 speed SLK/black/java tells me the other night that if I park his car one more time w/out closing the top, and locking the doors - we are headed for divorce court.

I say there is no need to close that top for short jaunts to the local 7-11, or Walmart. There is absolutely nothing inside the car that can be taken (his prepaid toll sensor is locked in the glovebox). The car is on Teleaid - and they tend to call even when we accidently set the car alarm off. Since the mention of divorce court - I have decided to ask how many of you leave your SLK un-secured when going into stores or even in your own driveway for short periods of time.

I hate to throw away 26 years of marriage, but hey - we live in Florida and the law says I get half..!! :v

If you complain when he leaves the toilet seat up then he has the right to complain about you leaving the top down.

It's a damn car! Nothing more than bunch of metal all meshed together. If the word divorce seriously comes into play over a car, then I think there are far more important issues to address.
IMHO

You guys will all stick together. Of course he's being tongue in cheek when he says he'll divorce me if I leave his car unsecured again - but it's a convertible for goodness sakes, aren't the tops supposed to be left down :v

top down

On a more serious note, I only leave the top down if I will be away from the car for less than 10 minutes or if it is my own driveway. I have rolled the windows up on occassion just to make it more difficult for someone to just 'open' the doors even though I leave nothing inside the car.
But then again if I lived in NYC, I wouldn't ever leave the top down so it may depend on where you live!

Go for the half and you'll be on your way owning your very own top down 2006 6 speed SLK! His comment is ridiculous! I'm sure he has his zipper down when you don't know it. j/k

Okay.......this is a guy talking (writing)

I just bought my 1998 SLK two weeks ago and it is in perfect condition with <25K miles on it. It is the most fun car I ever owned and I love to drive it anywhere with the top down. I only put the top up if I knew I would be park it for a long time........such as work, golf or hours of shopping. Otherwise, I would leave the top down.........besides, it is a great feeling walking towards a convertible with its top down.

You could buy a BVRC from Jerry at www.formymercedes.com that allows you to close the roof (or open) automatically as you walk away

This unit would make an excellent Christmas gift for my husband. I will start calling around seeing who is proficient enought to perform the install immediately. My local stealership lost 5 of their top tech's to mutiny. They now have their own shop and are doing a lot of the things you can't get done (or are too expensive to have done) at the stealership. I will try them first.

Florida is not a community property state. The parties in a divorce negotiate a settlement, not necessarily 50/50. Been there, done that.

Smart girls marry in a community property state, and if they have to file for divorce - they file in the same state.

I am going to stick the E class so we can live in wedded bliss a bit longer. I much prefer closing the door and walking away to having to put the top up and down on short excursions.

Oh come on...............let's stop the nonsense with the divorce talk. It is a damn car.......as someone mentioned earlier, it is a pile of metal and plastic. it is not worth breaking a 20+ years of marriage over this. Besides, we, men are supposedly provide love and care for our love ones. If the damn car breaks and falls apart, just buy a new one. In addition, a new car is whole lot cheaper than a divorce settlement and you get to enjoy it too. So what is the issue here? So wise up...........

" Im always looking for a way to travel light but if I have to leave I can fit more with the top down and look better while doing it .... "

If you didnt divorce him when he bought the car then dont expect much in the way of empathy when you find that the E-Class would have at least fit all of your shoes in the back seat .... and the SLK doesnt have a back seat.

Now tell me .... what does your husband want with your girly shoes or does he only get to keep half of them.

Top is always up, even if its a quick run into the bank. People just don't have respect for nice cars. You never know what sort of jerk will walk by and spit in it! I had a sebring convertable years ago and I left the top down to go into the mall, when I came back there was a cig butt laying on my drivers seat. It burnt the leather up pretty bad.

Since it's such an easy top to put up ( one button pushed, hold for 20 seconds) why not put it up? I could see leaving it down if it required some work

It depends on the neighborhood. Where I live, I once left my CL parked for 3 hours in front of my house with the motor running and when I got back, it was just as I left it--still running.

When I drive my SL to the grocery store (again in my neighborhood), I often leave the top down; however, In other parts of town, I put the top up and lock the car. Sure, if it's it's stolen the car will be recovered, but it could also be damaged and infected with some lowlife's germs and filth.

Give your hubby peace of mind and put the top up.

Buy a good tonneau cover which takes all of 2 minutes to install and lock your car with the top down. Not only will it keep dust, sun damage to the interior as well as protect from spit, poured drinks and an ocassional shower. The $ 80.00 investment is well worth it in the long run. I have one for my SLK 230 and one for my SL500.
