Is the trunklid supposed to stay open?
This may be a dumb question, but is the trunklid supposed to stay open? My girlfriend bought a used 2000 SLK230 and the trunklid doesn't stay up after lifting it up. The lid shocks appear to be working fine, they take quite a bit of pressure to push them in. TIA for your input.

I have seen it a few times during this past winter where the trunk lid support shocks give up and start leaking. More than likely this is your problem. Go ahead and replace both of them while you are in there. They are 2 small black shocks on either side of the trunk lid and should be decently cheap from the dealer. Takes less than 5 minutes to replace both in most cases.

After I bought my 2001 SLK 320, I noticed the same problem. I bought some new struts for around $40. It opens easier, and stays up. (Also, my hood strut gave up, too. That one was more expensive.)

$150 for labor is absurd. This is an easy easy easy job that shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. I purchased mine from the link above, and the install went fine. (Just don't completely remove the metal tab -- you'll understand when you see it).
