170 tire milege???????

New client with 2001 SLK320 and 280k miles on the clock. Tires haven't been rotated, because of different sizes front and back. Fronts in excellent condition, but rears are bald. All 4 tires replaced 24k miles ago. What gives?

Avery,
You might be right about the tire spinning. I haven't met the owner yet, because he's out of the country right now. His profile is 42 yo male horse surgeon. Why did you make the comment on fact these cars are hard on tires? This car has a 6 speed stick so it would be difficult to do the old foot on brake and foot on gas routine to light em up. Thanks for your input.

Is the rear tire wear even? I made the comment because many people (most with lowered cars) get excessive, uneven wear because of excessive camber. Companies make camber adjustment kits for lowered cars to combat this. If the wear is even and the fronts are good my guess is he's having too much fun with the throttle.

24K is great mileage for soft rubber for the rears. Most guys I know get 10-15K on average.

24K is not that bad depending on the tires. I got about that many miles from my C230 with the factory Conti tires. Why the rear wears out first is odd but not impossible, just could have been underinflated for a while.

Thanks for thr replies guys. This one is a mystery to me. The tire are pretty evenly worn across, and since this car is a one legger, the right is almost bald while the left has a few thou to go. The car has not been lowered. The owner's girl friend says he is not an aggressive driver. The guy will be back from Dubai in a couple of weeks so I'll ask him in person. Here's another part of the mystery. He bought the car new in 2001 and has put 280,000 miles on the car. Why would he make an issue now about this last set of tires? IIRC the tires are Toyo. They are directional and installed correctly.

An '01 with 280K??? That's 40,000 miles per year!

My '99 has 65,000 miles and it's a daily driver! (ok, short commute)
