CD Player?

Anyone have any experience with adding an after-market CD player?

I'm sick of making audio tapes!

I'm thinking head only...I hate to give up the trunk space and the MB changer seems a bit exorbitantly priced...

Thanks!

I recommend getting a headunit that plays mp3/wma. It is cheaper than the factory player, way more functions, and sounds just a bit better...

DickB,

I'm about to install a OEM CD changer in my 320, I liked the way you installed it, so I'm wondering, did you use the standard MB installation bracket? If not how did you keep it in place?

Thanks.

I made my own bracket out of aluminum bar stock. It's a very simple U-shaped bracket, two bends in a vise. Then I drilled holes to match the side of the changer. The bottom of the 'U' runs beneath the changer. I pop riveted an L-shaped aluminum piece onto the bottom of this U, then used sheet metal screws to fasten the L part directly onto the SLK steel channel, through the plastic trunk liner, below the changer. The removable panel covers these screws. Most hardware stores stock this type of aluminum. Costs only a few bucks.

Very nicely done, DickB. If I can't find factory brackets for under $30, I'll go with that plus I get to save some trunk space. Anyone here know the factory part number for '99 up CD changer brackets?

brackets

I think DickB's done such a slick job with this you will probably see a ton of the mounting brackets on ebay due to the number of people performing this mod.

Diagrams

DickB, can you post a diagram of the bracket and where and how it installs in the side compartment? It looks like it is mounted on the driver's side in your picture.
ALso, does anyone have pictures of the stock CD-changer installation? I think I only have half of the bracket. I have the part up against the plastic panel that covers the roof motor, where the wires come out. Also, when putting the two HU wires in the same plastic clip, does it matter what order they are in?

Thanks

Here is a diagram of the bracket.

Aluminum bar stock and L stock from a hardware or home improvement store.

Position of the fibers matters.

Connect per the diagram. 'Standard configuration' is how the SLK comes from the factory I think. Connect per the right diagram.

Whats behind that plastic and how do you remove it? It looks like the plastic pins to hold on door panels. I just don't want to start ripping apart my trunk. I imagine you just cut out a hole for the changer? Also, did you run the wires there from the passenger side of the car? If, so how hard was that.
Also, since the head unit keys I ordered with the CD-changer didn't get shipped, can someone tell me how to remove the head unit by using a swiss army knife, like the SLK32.com directions say? I never removed a european HU before and have no clue what I need to feel for.

I knew I should have taken pictures of the installation.

There are two pieces of plastic. The first is the panel that covers the space for the optional telephone unit. It is held in place by the plastic pins. Remove the four pins and it comes right off.

Go ahead and pull this off and take a look. It's a lot clearer to do this than try to understand my poor explanation.

The second piece of plastic is the trunk liner. It is a large piece, but you don't need to remove it. I just cut a hole in it while it was in place. There is already a good portion of a 'hole' (actually a recess open from behind) for the telephone unit. You just expand this existing hole (quite a bit) to get the changer to fit.

Yes, I ran wires from the passenger side. Cut and splice a section in. I removed the back panels and ran the wires through. Not hard.

Follow the directions on slk32.com to remove the head unit with a Swiss army knife. That's exactly the way I did it. It's easy.
