Pelle 75,
It was such a difficult situation you have been facing.
My recommendation
1. Set up VDO recorder , record all those stupid . Send the tape to police make a big deal out of it once to stop the other.
2. Put a message on the car saying "Brave Ones Never Hit A Car"
Hope they will stop doing this act soon.

...........
because the dealership didnt have any 2002 slks in manual, they tried selling me a 2001 blue slk with a sports kit, manual, for 41000. but my dad said no, and he told me that we are going to walk out of the dealership with a car, so i was really excited, never thought about the differences between auto and manual. After a month, i found out that there is an AMG model, and we tried trading it in. the dealership wanted my car for 38000
(bought it for45000) and the AMG was 55000. but then i just found out that there is a new model coming out in 2004, so i will just wait.

For you guys that wanted a stick and didn't get one, don't feel too bad. The SLK's shifter and clutch setup is one of the worst availabe. Seriously, I had a '99 SLK230 Sport with the 5-speed manual and except for a couple of full-size American pickups, it was the worst manual transmission setup I'd ever experienced. The clutch throw is extremely long and the shifter is notchy and rubbery at the same time. It's extremely difficult to shift very fast.
The 6-speed in the '01 and newer SLKs is marginally better, but since the gear ratios are closer, you have to shift it more often.
Maybe the R171 will offer a better manual, we'll just have to wait and see. Plus, it's extremely likely that M-B will offer Sequentronic in the R171. Sequentronic is M-Bs sequential manual (a manual transmisison with an electrohydraulic clutch like BMW's SMG and Ferarri's F1). Currently Sequentronic is available in Europe on the C-class, E-class, and CLK-class with the 200CDI, 220CDI, 270CDI, 180K, 200K, and 240 engines.

SLK 320
AGREED.
During the first two months of driving my stick shift SLK 320 '01, I've developed a sored left ankle and had to limp for a little while. 3-inch heels and MB clutch do not go well together! Also the shifter is too loose which makes shifting a bit rough.

I must be the old man of the bunch. 61 when I bought it used. A 4 year old '98 with 16K miles on it
I love it!
Picture below was taken in the North Georgia mountains during a Geocache hunt.
Front license plate is the then current Georgia state flag. We had (and it still continues) a controvery over which flag should fly. This one lasted 2 years.

Looks like the average age has dropped considerably in the past 4 years. I'd guess that it's due to the affordability of used SLKs.
Back in 1998, people were paying over $50K for used SLKs. Now you can buy a super low-mileage used SLK230 for under $25K.
