Rattle in Rear

I have the rattle behind the drivers seat that it seems others have had. Dealer mechanic rode with me & heard it, am trying to find out from them the exact probelm as they still have the car. Service writer says panels are on order. Don't know which ones but seems to me why they could not tighten them etc. When I know the exact ones that were causing the rattle I will post them.

PLEASE! I've got a similar problem. Dont know whether our "origin" are the same though. Everytime when I go over speed bumps or uneven roads, I can hear a platic knocking sound, its very obvious. I dont think my noise if from the seats, but from the trunk. However, my dealer was not able to locate the exact location of the noise.

As soon as I find out what they found I will post it. The head mechanic took the ride with me & heard it, he said he would have to ride in the trunk to locate it. Dropped it off week ago Friday & this Friday they called to say parts were ordered, some panels. The service writer said he would call me Monday with the parts ordered. They say the parts will be in Wed. or Thurs. this week.

Could it be that your spare tire is not properly fastened? That could produce a rattling sound.

is this with the top up or down? i noticed with the top up, the back window is NOT solidly glued on the lower left (if you look at the car from the back). You can tell by tapping on it, the lower right feels solid, while the lower left makes a noise if you tap it. Havent had time to take it in to get glued tho... too busy enjoying the car on vacations to take the time to take it in

i know exactely your problem and the solution.
when you heard that sound catch the seat belt of the passenger seat and let it pass ON the right side of the seat above the leather.. DON'T let it hang between the seat and the door panel.. that sound came from the bumping of the metal of the belt and the panel... try that and tell me.. if you are not sure of the correct position, just try to fasten the seat belt even if you have no passenger..
let me know.. otherwise i'll post you a picture of my passenger seat with the belt...

I've discovered your solution, too. That's a lower-pitched bang/thump. I also resolved the higher-pitched noise from the passenger side, which (thanks to a prior posting) turned out to be the seatback too far back and vibrating the airscarf inside the seatback... just moved the seatback forward a hair so it didn't hit the back of the compartment.

I still have this mid-frequency creaking/squeaking noise from behind the driver's seat near the roof supports when driving over rough road surface or roadway joints with the roof up.

I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what solutions people come up with. Thanks.

...Karl

I had a similar problem and came up with the same seatbelt solution that Japoto did...however if you had the mechanic riding with you surely he was wearing his seatbelt which would eliminate the issue...

Just received the call from the service advisor who said the parts ordered, panels in the trunk are coming from Germany. They believe this is causing the rattle but won't know till they install them. They are not due till Thurs. or Fri.

My dealer called me yesterday after 17 days that the rattle is fixed. I get there & see hatshelf & trunk cover panel replaced as being damaged. I know they were not damaged when I brought it in. I had the head tech come over to explain & while there I attempted to open the roof, only the windows came down. I checked the trunk cover & it seemed locked but I fooled around with it & the roof finally opened. Seems they messed up the cover as it does not stay locked by the roof switch. Took the head tech for a ride & the rattles are worse, now both sides. Definitely not the door as the tech drove over bumps with the door open & still had the rattle. Also noticed a oily film on the front window inside over the center top vent. It seems that by being out in the sun unused 17 days it gave off a chemical from the vent that the tech said he saw in a few "C" series the MB had no fix for & advised me to leave the vent closed. I contacted MB & the regional rep is coming down my salesman has a good repoire with him & am hoping that I can get them to exchange this lemon for another SLK350, the dealer said they will have to dismantle the trunk & panels to find the rattle. I have no faith in them after the last fix which did not fix the problem. Car has 1122 miles on it.

Rattle in Rear

Now owning an 2004 SLK I thought I was moving away from poor build quality from my previous Lotus Elise.

Well after a frustrating few thousand miles of looking for the rattle, trying all the tips I eventually found the problem...

I thought, I'd try exactly the same trick as I had on the Elise. The rattle was due to loose doors.

By applying tape around the slam-bolt (this is where the door latch connects to the cars body) it has stiffened the door and now there is no rattle.

A temporary measure until I get the car in for its first service, and seems to have done the trick for 5000 miles so far!!!

Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same problems.

Tyrone

The cause is one of two things.

1) The seat belt buckle is hanging between the seat and door and banging against the seat plastic part. Move the seat belt on top of the seat so that it rests against the leather. No more rattle.

2) The lock mechanism has been installed upside down in some SLK's. You'll need to have it replaced to stop the rattling.

My dealer "eliminated" the rattle so far. It was coming from the flaps that move when opening & closing the roof, seems they put some stick on foam strips under it to eliminate the rattle, don't know how long it will last though.

Steve, can you tell me where exactly did your dealer tape the foam strips? Any chance that you can take a pic of it?

Are you still asking MB to buy back your car?

Try to put some lubricant on the door striker(latch) on the side you suspect the knocking sound is coming from.

That may solve the knocking rattling sound

Give it a try

On the underside of both flaps.
