Smartkey Top Down/Up feature question

I have the premium pkg on my slk and can only get the remote top down/up feature to work while standing practically on top of the car while pointing the key toward the gas tank. I might as well just get in and do it... am I doing something wrong since I thought the feature would be kinda cool walking toward the car... top comes down... but you just look like a lazy dork pointing your key at a gas tank! Help!

On the door handle on both sides.. you will notice a small black surface( forgot the actual term for those things) but then those are the recepters and you point the smart key onto that thing and it will open/close and all.
But you still have to quite close to the car.

The remote top feature is infrared, and thus short line of sight, rather than radio frequency, as the other features on the key are.

It is normal. Basically you have to point the key right AT the infrared receiver on the door handle.

The only time i use mine is when I'm smoking (cuz it would be criminal to smoke in it) just before I get in to drive away... saves me 20 seconds or so... otherwise pretty useless...

Yes, if it is RF, it should be COOL..
it can be top down automatically(you are pressing the button )
and waiting for the owner, you, to come and ride it.
I don't know why MB don't add it.. and don't add Keyless go..
Due to the cost? (shouldn't) to Classify the Grade from other, like SL class?

The extra infrared system cost more to add than simply making it RF. It is that way for liability reasons. You must be facing and close to your car for it to work so you can see if someone (a child) is in danger of being crushed by the roof operation.

pretty sure it was infrared... had to be pretty close to do it (maybe not as close as the slk, but still close)

So it sounds like the Premium package is a waste?

· Rain Sensor
· Digital Dual Zone Automatic Climate Control
· Interior ambient light package
· IR remote roof automatic

Garage door opener. Should be standard on all models, or at least an add-on feature.
Autodimming mirror. I can live without.
Rain Sensor. How lazy can you be?
Climate control. Gimmicky option.
Lighting package. Who's going to notice this except yourself and your passenger?
IR Remote roof. Obviously nobody is happy with the way this feature works.

Bottom line - are these features really worth $1400? I don't think so.

What does the climate control gimmick actually do?

Vodil, you have to make your own decisions of course, but let me rebute Essellkay350 with MHO

You can't get HomeLink garage door opener seperate, I consider that a must (unless you like hanging things off your visor).

After you've lived with Autodimming mirrors for years and get in one w/o (like a rental) you realize how used you are to not having to flip the lever or adjust the mirror when driving in traffic at night.

Rain sensor is great, not laziness at all. I was ALWAYS frustrated with never getting either the set speed or the intermitent speed to match the amount of rain (always fiddling with the intermitent speed up and down, unless it was just really raining). The Rain sensor is not about avoiding turning the switch on when it rains (though that works also), but about the wipers wiping to match the amount of water. Best auto invention in the last 50 years!

Auto A/C multiple opinions on this. I'm an auto man (my wife on the other hand is binary both in the car and in the house: "it's too hot", "its too cold"!).

Interior ambient light, just a perference, you didn't buy a Huyndai did you?

IR remote roof, yes pretty much a gimmic.

Finally, I would tell you to scan the forums and see how many times people have regretted not grabbing all the options on their car.

Have fun

Autodimming mirror. I can live without. - I like it. Manual mirrors are so 1960s
Rain Sensor. How lazy can you be? - Great option. Works like a charm.
Climate control. Gimmicky option. - Some people don't know how to run manual AC these days. Off or On
IR Remote roof. Obviously nobody is happy with the way this feature works. WOrks fine.
