SLK/R171: Harman Kardon LOGIC 7
#2
I have the HK logic 7, it was one of the optional things I added when I bought the
car. Basically, you get 11 speakers, and a wider range of sound settings. I really
like it. The bass is really great!! If you just have the standard sound system
(COMMAND or without COMMAND), you are only going to get a 2 channel (stereo)
sound system. HK logic 7 gives you a 7-channel home-theatre type sound system. If
you were not going to watch DVDs or play Audio DVDs in the car, then I guess the
differences wouldn't be that big.

I've got HK upgrade without Nav. It's got a terrific sound, but I sure wish there was a front-to-back fader capability so I could actually hear something from the rear-center speakers. Other than that little nit, I like it a lot.

Definitely get the HK sound system. If for no other reason, the MB sound system is REDICULOUSLY expensive to upgrade in the aftermarket. I worked in the field for 7 years.
Having done what I did for a long time, I've heard some of the world's best sound systems in cars, and of course, the SLK is a far cry from what you could buy in the aftermarket, but it's not worth the headache or the money for me, or for 99.9% of the people in the world.
The upgraded sound system does sound much better than the standard, and you'd spend several thousand dollars trying to get it right later if you don't go for it now.

Not completely true. The LOGIC7 creates a virtual multi-speaker surround from a stereo music signal. That really is it's purpose in our car. Though some people prefer regular STEREO and no synthetic processing to create surround, I personally love it (not just the HK in my Benz, but also the same effect with ML in my Lexus's).
Then in addition you get a better and more powerful amplifer, etc.

So far, the H-K is the best factory stereo *I've* ever heard in my 42 years.
Comparisons: Lexus Mark-Levinson, GM B(L)OSE stereos, Acura systems, BMW, Jaguar.
It's nice just to get into the car to back it out of the garage, and find myself listening through an entire song, and not wanting to shut it off!
