Replacing Shift Knob Slk 55
Hey Fellow Proud Slk Owners
Does Anyone Know How To Remove The Shift Knob On An Automatic 2005 Slk 55. It Seems Benz Didn't Put Too Much Thought In The Looks Of Their Gear Knobs . Also Would Any Type Of Knob Be Used Or Does It Have To Be Specific To These Cars? Anyhelp Would Be Appreciated.

This was done few years ago....
1) Dislodge the leather boot around the shift knob from the plastic base
2) Pull up the leather boot all the way up as high as possible towards the shift knob
3) You will expose the underside of the leather of the leather boot, and expose the collar that locks down the shift knob
4) Turn the collar (i can't remember ccw or cw)
5) With the collar turned, the shift knob becomes loose and can be remove from the shaft.
Re-install the opposite direction....hope this helps.
Good Luck....

I bought a beautiful chrome gear shift knob on-line ($85) that was supposed to fit like OE but there was no way to re-attach the leather boot leaving the gear mechanism below and the inside of the console visible which looked bad. The leather boot is attached permanently to the OE knob.
I returned the chrome knob and re-installed the OE knob, cracks and all. So far I haven't seen anything other than factory replacement that truely fits.

Check on the site www.formymercedes.com. IA big range of knobs but depends of you have one with the leather boot or not. My SLK 2.3 Kompressor doesnt have a boot and the noew know I bough from these guys is fantastic. All choice. If your has a boot look in the Class knobs. ALL knobs attache the same way except the ones with boots. Pice of cake to fit.
