I read German, just not too fast. Bottom line, they overall picked the SLK over the BMW.

1. Handling the SLK and Z4 have different philosophies of handling both good

2. Slalom both did well through the pylons, but the ESP of the SLK holds it back a little more compared to the more aggressive Z4 handling

3. Marterstrecke – you got me on this, but neither are in their element although the SLK is a little better – I think it may have to do with ride.

4. Braking from 100KPH SLK = 37 meters Z4 = a half meter more

5. Sprint test SLK = 6.0 seconds Z4 = 7.0 seconds

6. Acceleration from 60 to 100KPH SLK = 6.0 seconds Z4 = 6.4 seconds

7. Interior noise @ 100Kilometer per hour quieter SLK= 69dbA and Z4 = 71 dbA

8. Top Speed SLK = 252 KPH while showing 260 on Speedo Z4 = 236 KPH while showing 245 on Speedo

9. Gas Mileage SLK needed 12.4 liter Super for 100Kilometers giving a range of 565 kilometers from the 70 liter tank Z4 took 12.0 liters with a range of 478 kilometers from 55 liter tank

Bottom line, they overall picked the SLK over the BMW.

finally! Most car enthusiast magazines are biased towards BMW's, this is one of the few comparisons that they have actually chosen the Mercedes...

maybe i can help out:

3. Marterstrecke – you got me on this, but neither are in their element although the SLK is a little better – I think it may have to do with ride.

the "marterstrecke" is a really bad-*** road, it shakes the car like hell. here you can see if there are weaks in the suspension and bodywork.

greets from germany,
felix

I have to say that the Z is a great handler but the ride was so harsh that I couldn't see it as a driver. A 15 minute test drive jarred my nerves almost as much as being shaken by a roller coaster! Well... maybe not quite as much but you get the idea.

Well, I for one have NEVER liked the BMW. While most seem to think it's a well engineered machine, I've never been a fan of the aesthetics of BMW. Hell, you can't tell the difference between a 3, 5 or 7 series when looking from the front. As for the Z4...It's far and away one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, and Nissan should sue them for using the "Z" name

the 19" rims of the bimmers are killing the ride, it feels like a Japanese car when u drive by harsh surfaces

..the SLK was the better choice in almost every aspect they concluded.

I would rather say it's pretty even between Merc and BMW in European carmags..

Last time in AMS the S-class beat the 7-series overall. Interestingly it there also beat the BMW in the traditional BMW-area "Fahrdynamik" (something like "driving-performance").

Ideally, I would love to have the handling of the Z4, the engine of a Boxster, and the looks of a SLK, but if there's something I won't comprise is the looks, so it's SLK for me!

Have you seen the SLK from the side? Maybe it's just me, but i'm not too thrilled about it from that angle.

I kinda like it, especially compared to the other two- Z4 looks decent from front but at the side it looks like the front hood was sawed off; Boxster is just too boringly similar to other Porsches to be distinctive.

I wouldn't mind if the SLK had side vents like the SL500 though
