SLK55 tire and gear questions

What is the biggest rear tire anyone has been able to get on SLK55? The stock 245s seem a bit narrow for the amount of power specially with any kind of mods.

As for gears, does anyone sell a higher rear gear than the stock 3.07? Like one in the 3.2x or 3.5x range?

thanks

Some have done up to 265 on the stock rims. 255 is the safest bet. When I change my stock ones I'll go 255 in the rear.

Not sure about the gears.

A lot of people seem to be using 265.. that's what kleemann fits on their SLK55 as well. I think if you get the right tire, like Toyo Proxes RA1, 265 should provide more than enough traction.

My 265 PS2's aren't the softest compounds but they're pretty damn good. That being said, I still easily break loose and my engine is stock. I'm sure you'll have loads of fun, er frustration, when you try to put your 500whp to the road.

PS2 are a good daily tire, but its definitely a huge performance compromise. I would definitely get some R-compound tires. On my 300hp elise, I've been using Yokohama A048 (1st pic) and it took off like a rocket with minimal wheelspin. Here's a few photos of R-compound tires: Yokohama A048, Toyo Proxes RA1 @ R888, Michelin Pilot Cups, followed by Michelin PS2 for comparison. You can tell the first 4 tires mean business just by looking at them

I hear ya. However, I still think you'll have a problem. The combination of high torque, no LSD, and skinny contact patch all work against you. Another issue is size availability. If you want 265/30/19, then some of the tires you suggested are unavailable.

The other problem, for me at least, is I wouldn't want an R compound unless I had a dedicated set of track wheels. I hear the Pilot Cups are dangerous in the wet. So, for daily driving, I would stay away from R compounds.

My 19" DPE's have the PS2's. My 18" stock wheels currently have the Yoko Azenis. I kept my stock wheels just for track events. They're not the best track tire, but they work well for AutoX and the road course yet are inexpensive.

SLK 55 AMG
I don't think it's possibly to change the gears just yet. Maybe you can take them from another AMG model if the gearing is different, but it's not going to be an easy swap...

I do know of a lot of S2000 owners who change gears tho', they're able to drop 0-60 times by a few tenths of a second. Not bad.

sport cups

Its been raining quite a bit this last month ... I'm not having any problems with the sports cups in the water. I just drive a bit slower.

Still not enough traction though

I'm definitely getting Kleemann LSD as well, I think its a must. As far as Pilot Cups in the wet, the one half of the tire is actually specifically designed to have good traction in the wet, they are supposed to be pretty good (see left side of the tire in that pic I posted). Plus you have traction control, so I wouldn't worry about it. What's really dangerous in the wet are A048, which is basically a motorcycle tire, on my 300hp elise without any form of traction control, no LSD, and 65% of the weight in the back. That took some getting used to

I currenty run BFGoddrich g-force T/A KDW-2 which are pretty good, was just wondering if anyone has fit 255 size on stock rear rims.

Run Nitto 555RII on my supercharged mustang and they actually do better in the rain than I thought they would. Tread wear is not good, but that's what you get with r compound tires.

265/35-18 will fit the stock rear wheels. it fills the gap nicely, no rubbing issues and doesn't stick out. just a word of caution... your speedo will be reading 2.2% slower than your actual speed.

Sorry to be lazy, but is there a wider than stock tire size on 18's that does not affect the speedo and odometer?
