Anyone remove the resonator on a SLK55 AMG?

I want to increase the exhaust sound on my 55 but want to retain the stock look. The stock sound is good but just not loud enough for me (flame me if you must).

I purchased a duplicate SLK 55 AMG exhaust system from the resonator back through the mufflers and tips. I’m keeping my original system intact so I can easily go back to stock if needed. I’m making an appointment with a shop in Ambler, PA, Fabspeed Motorsport to install the duplicate system without the resonator.

I used a light to look into the muffler from the tip end and can see all the way through to the back side through both tips. I see no baffles and no perforations inside the muffler. So the mufflers appear to be just a straight pipe! Can anyone else confirm this?

I hope to get this done in the next few weeks. I will try to record the exhaust sound before and after the mod, so I can post here.

I’m going to give this a try before removing the secondary cats.

a car that can't do the throttle reset.
no experience with resonator removal on a slk55, but ever other car i've owned i have usually always removed the resonator. you wont have any ce lights or anything. and it will definitely bring out the tone of the v8. only drawback i can think of, it will drone a bit at low rpms. but otherwise, nice choice. you're gonna love it.

plus, if you don't, you can always put it back in.

How much did it cost to buy a duplicate exhaust system.

Wouldn't it have been better to purchase an Eisenmann setup instead of a secondary AMG exhaust? MBenz charges ridiculous amounts on their parts.

It probably would have been much cheaper for you to just have gotten the resonator cut out, then if you didn't like it you could always get it put back on. Much cheaper than buying an extra exhaust. And there is a big difference between just cutting out a resonator and putting on an Eisenmann Exhaust. When I put my Eisenmann on, it was dramastically louder and the tone was totally different than stock. When I got the resonator cut out, it was just a little louder and just sounded better.

My first try was to have Kleemann cat + resonator removed, it was too loud...way too loud ( Straight pipes with stock muffler ). I tried putting Kleemann cat back + X-pipe, it works a lot better. ( Kleemann cats back on +x-pipe +Kleemann exhaust)

But I might have Kleemann cat removed again, just because I want it a little louder. The key to smoother sounding and eliminate drone is the x-pipe.

Zaint: Where did you get the x-pipe??

alroumi: I have difficulty getting Fabspeed to return my calls so I can get on their schedule. I guess business is too good!!
