The SLK doesn't have the widest rubber out there, thus, the torque tends to overwhelm the vehicle when stomping on it.

There's a few things you can do:

1) disable ESP (partially) and stomp on the gas. Tires will most likely spin, but you'll eventually grab the pavement and start moving.
2) disable ESP (completely via backdoor method) and stomp on the gas. Some report that this helps the launch.
3) get a Kleemann/Brabus LSD installed. Definitely should help you lower 0-60 times by about 0.3 seconds.
4) don't stomp on the gas, but go down on it carefully, first by helping the car move along (pressed down roughly half way or 2/3rds on the pedal) and half a second later, completely push down on the pedal to give maximum power. This should reduce wheelspin.
5) use fresh rubber or even better, drag radials.

Some get better time when driving in manual mode, as it means that the car isn't downshifting due to a sudden stomp to kick-down mode on the pedal. But you need to get the shifts down just right and this is not easy to do due to the inherent lag of the automatic gearbox.

It is possible to get the car to be a 4.3 second vehicle (for the 0-60) but it takes a little practice and the right conditions.

By pressing the button, you will "partially" disable ESP. If you wish to fully disable it, you need to do that via service menus. I can not recall the process, but you can do a search for it. Be cautious if you fully disable ESP as it turns off BAS, ABS and more. For that reason, I would simply suggest using the button and leaving the service menu alone.

If you're not having wheelspin issues the other thing you could try is the ecu reset. All MB cars have extremely laggy throttles and that will of course hurt your times.

Looking for a new toy.
With the stock Pirelli's I found the following method best for launching (verifed at the dragstrip):

1. ESP "off"
2. Trans in "Sport" mode
3. Ease to half throttle til the car is moving, then quickly foot to floor. That's the dicey part, balancing wheel spin with traction. Just nailing it was a waste of time with the stock tires as the car would just sit and spin.

But with the new Bridgestone RE-01R's, I can just nail it and hang on. MUCH better traction, also verified at the track where I lowered my 60' times from 2.0x's to 1.9x's.

1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.

2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.

3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

Start the car and enjoy.

Personally I find it not that affective, the ecu will adapt and learn your driving style over time.

I do it frequently. Some do it every day. Try it and see is the best answer.

Thanks...I'm going to try this after work. I'll see how it goes...I imagine that once I replace my heavy P30 rims with lighter rims, I'll need to do it after that too.... Anyhow, thank you.

Can't believe AMG still doesn't use any type of LSD.

What is the widest size tire you can put on the rear of an SLK55?
Stock and aftermarket wheels - - with H&R sport springs?

Thanks!

275 is the max aftermarket. The stockers will take a 265. Not much wiggle room.

I wonder how much it cost to get all those electronics to pretend to be an LSD and by then wouldn't it have been cheaper just to put a real LSD on there?

^ Thanks. Will either 265 or 275 rub (inside or out) with the H&R drop? Assuming of course the 275 was on an aftermarket wheel with specified offsets.

Yeah, and LSD would be cheaper and better - - hard to make it think and act like it has something it doesn't. I have a C43 now with 245s in the rear and it's ridiculous on a really rainy day; have to monitor the throttle closely and we all know how cool the throttle response is on these cars.

No lights or sounds. You can tell if it worked when you hit the gas if you did it right. Make sure you turn the key to 'ON' which is 1 'click' before the engine starts. Immediately mash the pedal to the floor and hold it. Count to 5 or whatever, I usaully wait until the audio displays on the dash(station or track), then turn the key off but don't take it out. You can now take your foot off the pedal. Then just wait a few and turn the car on and go.

I'm not really sure about aftermarket rims, I always just keep the stock ones. Several others here have aftermarkets with 275s so hopefully they'll chime in. 265s on stock don't rub.

It works! I recently bought a 2006 and boy was that necessary. it feels totally different. gear shifting smoother. much more responsive. i guess i needed to "clear" the past settings. well done.

WyattH: some MB's do have LSD's, but they're usually reserved for the more expensive AMG's. I believe the SL65 and C63 has them...

Interesting, I suppose that's good to know. Glad the C63 has one.
I guess it's kind of like Porsche leaving the Cayman and Boxster without it to protect their 911, and BMW leaving it out of all non-M cars (335i specifically, doh!).

Oh well, I'm sure it will be fine with some good 265s.

The SL55,E55,CLS55 & 63's have the LSD if only its an 030 package car from the factory, and samething applies to the new W204 C-class.

If only the SLK55 was a kompressor with LSD... It'd be the best car in the world.

I agree, but for what you get out of the box; its not that short of "best" to what I want and need in a car.

I love Mercedes-benz, find them to be robust and in my blood; family members had SL's and S-classe's loved them and enjoyed the MB experience since young age.
