I drove quiet fast when I first recieved my SLK and knock on wood no problems till present day.
If you want to drive fast make sure not to redline the car and shifter slightly earlier so the gearbox/ecu gets used to your driving stlye.
The engine is allready broken in at AMG on an engine dyno its the gearbox that isnt broken in.
Good luck and Congradulations on the new car, that is a good New Years gift.

keep in mind every AMG car went through high speed and bump test before leaving the factory, so you're not receiving a car with a 0 mileage engine on it. Just drive it like you stole it.

Are you sure you were in the right gear? Don't just leave the car in D if you're going to race someone, downshift to the lowest possible gear (because it takes the car forever to downshift on its own when you floor it.). Also turn the traction control off "ESP OFF" if you're racing.

I also heard to leave it in "S" mode and not "M" mode for the fastest shifts. Feather the throttle until there's traction b4 petal to the metal, you should beat the IS350 easily, the SLK350 should be the one that barely beats it.

20+ to list......
Exactly, unless the IS350 you raced had some sort of forced performance.

SLK 55 AMG
Some engines tend to be at their best after 10-15k miles.
The engine may very well have been broken-in at the AMG factory, but other components in the car have not. The engines are often run as-is (i.e. out of the car) on a bench for several hours at high speed to check for any problems. The gearbox is not taken through such a routine.
Thus, if you do a hard break-in, the transmission and drivetrain may suffer.
Also, the 7G gearbox adapts to ones driving style. So why don't you first let the car bed in fine for a thousand miles, and then see what it has in store. The 7G can also be "reset" to the high performance/responsitivity status with a few button presses.
Be careful when "racing". Don't want more roadkill then necessary.

You'll get differing opinions on break-in periods...I personally would've taken it easy for the first couple of hundred miles, then I would drive it like I would normally be driving it...either way, you should not have only beat the IS350 by one car...you should easily have crushed it

It can? I searched the owners manual but NADA. I've heard of the reset of the ECU but that's not what you are talking about. Please tell us how ol' wise one.

check your owners manual page 278, it explains the break in period for the first 1000 miles, stay below 4500rpms use the c button and stay under 85mph. it will pay off in the long run if you plan on keeping the car. Good Luck
