Drag Radials

Anyone ever put drag radials on your SLK?

I'm discovering that I can't find the right size. Stock overall diameter is 24.75 inches or 628.65 mm.

I run on regular tires :

265/35 18s which are overall diameter of 25.30 inches
265/30 19s which are overall diameter of 25.25 inches

The closest I can find is from BGF 275/35 18s with a diameter of 25.57.

My concern is the higher diameter of an additional 1/4 inch over my largest size today and also the wider width.

My car has not been lowered but does have the 030 package.

First first question is if anything this the 275/35 18 will work
Secondly if anyone has figured out a good drag radial size for the SLK regardless of rim size.
Third how can I reprogram the various computer systems that have everything set to the current standard size to be slightly larger. I don't want ABS etc all going crazy.

You should first install an LSD if you have not already done so to decrease chassis rotation & increase grip. If you have already done this, you need to decrease your rim size - trying to drag on 19" is friggin' crazy (there is very little sidewall which contributes to wheel hop...one reason why I stick w/18"). I'd recommend a 17" rim (even 18" is too large IMO but it's better than a 19").

Additional sizes for DRs are avail in smaller diameters - nobody drags on a 19" rim. I'd suggest a 245/50ish or 255/50ish DR on a 17" rim for better results - my 2 cents (you pick the sidewall height - I'm just conveying the more the better as long as your wheel well can accomodate it).

I second Matt's suggestion.

Maybe have CCW custom make you a 17".

THE BFG is great nice and soft, you could also get a true slick from HOOSIER and they do make a 19". You do not need to do anything to the ecu. The key with you car is the torque the massive amount and no weight to speak of over the rear. You need a super hot sticky tire to make up for the rear.

BFG is soft so is hoosier, bfg is an 18 and the hoosier can be had in a 19. I have used the BFG and it helped but it also slowed my car after it was rolling because of the weight of the car compressing the rubber. This is why I stay with the MPSC, its r comp yet can handle heavy weights under stress.

diameter

yes I'm open to any size. I wasn't looking for a drag radial in 19s ...

But looking at tire sizes even going down to 16s or 17s all diameters are greater than 25.6 inches.

The only size under 25.6 is a 225/ 17 which makes no sense.

The fraction of an inch you are looking at to try & match exact wheel diamter is irrelevant - especially for drag purposes which measure your ET & speed through the Quarter (if it's a big deal to you, just swap your 19"/street tires back on when done doing your pulls).

PS - I was teasing you on the 19" rim drag comment - just poking fun w/you as I haven't seen ya in a while. Hope you are doing well - the wife says "Hi" & Happy New Year Jessie

size difference

yeah I don't care as long as there is no rubbing ... but on tire rack it says that if there is greater than a 3% size difference it can affect your different computer systems.

the 19s and 18s I have are around 1-2% greater in size. But when you look at drag radials they are all over 3 %.

Gonna call Toyo tomorrow ... looks like they might have something but its for a rim at 16inches. Not sure if that will clear the rear brakes.

Tell the wife I said hi! Let me know next time you go to an event.

Jesse,

OT: Ben has 17" with Mickey Thompson for his SL 65. AND HE has no problem with traction on the raceway.

Drag Radials

A while back I had a chance to purchase a set of BfG 275 / 40 / 17" , mounted on a AMG Double spoke wheels. They came off of billc-55 ( SLK 5.5 AMG) The Wheel was marked ET- 30 and was a tad under 9" wide. I saw them on his car
and they just fit . But when he loaded up the trunk with all his stuff for a week end trip . They would rub ever so slightly on parking lot speed bumps , but not out on the hwy.. I didn't purchase them , because of the minor scuffs , but because they had some cuts in the thread area from road trash. When I did mine ,I purchased a new pair of BFG 275/40/17" . Took my stock CLK 5.5 double spoke wheels, out to the shop. Set them up in the vertical mill and removed .315 from the hub . This moved them inward. I also had to machine the Hub ring area & install new rings. No big deal. I posted a thread on The CLK w-209 AMG & pictures Cheers ___PTE___

okay

THanks PTE ... sounds like the greater than 3% diameter issue doesn't bother you.

Great to know that they fit in there without rubbing.

Omg

Where can you get these? I even called MT and they said they didn't have anything.

Ah I just went to check tire size ... its 25.71 in diameter.

Makes more sense to try and get a 275/35 18 to fit. 25.57 in diameter.

Thanks Hammer for looking though.

Bfg

Decided to order a set of BFG 275/35 18 Drag radials. If I can't get to fit I'll go down to BFG R1's. Not drag radials but the lowest UTQG of all non drag tires I can find. The R1's are 40 treadware. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are 80 treadware.

Wish me luck. Adam if you see this, before I give you a call, just order two BFG 275/35 18 drag radials for the Renntech rims.
