2nd CAT Delete back from shop

Well, I decided I needed a bit more growl, so I deleted the 2nd CATs. Previously, I installed an x-pipe and removed the rear cans.

That sounds GREAT!

How's the resonance on the road?

No resonance at all. Never put any kind of can on the rear for the sound to bounce around, so it pretty much exits the back. Is it load when you stomp it all the way...yes...but in a good way. Is it crazy sick loud? No. Everyday driving in traffic, can't tell much at all except a bit more volume and bigger bass rumble.

Sounds great. You need to get a clip of it under load. I'm sure it sounds amazing. Nice work.

Yep, no doubt it sounds great. I do have one comment though- or more of a question....why would you post a BLATANT violation of section 203(a)3 of the "Clean Air act-WITH YOUR LICENSE PLATE IN PLAIN VIEW? Not to mention the outstanding pictures of the actual violation.
Violation of that law is punishable by a $25000- yes TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND dollar fine for EACH violation.

There are specific mileage laws that pertain to actually REPLACING cats that have failed in service.

If you think you can't get caught- be VERY careful on interstate highways-especially when there are roving groups doing checks around truck weigh stations.

Never touched primary CATs, only 2nds which are only put on vehicles b/c CA emission laws need them. Primaries meet federal guides. The 25K fine is for dealers, not individuals. Individuals face potentially a $2500 fine. As the post 02 sensors are only post primary, I don't think MB would design a car wherein 2nd CATs are functional to federal standards. Did I mention my Benz is for racing only?

Even if you did get pulled over I'm sorry but this is my personal opinion I dont think any cop will be able to tell that there isnt post CATs on the car. The primaries are still attached which are the only ones that really matter. I have the same set up but I have not touched the CATs (thinking about it) and I have straight pipes instead of an X pipe. I have been pulled over a couple times first time the guy was an idiot on a bike I got the ticket went to the station and argued that I was driving at high RPMs so the engine was roaring they signed off in it. The second time I was at a light in SF and two cops came up to the car asking about the exhaust because it sounded amazing! lol Anyway car sounds great when I am back in CA in June I am thinking of doing the same thing! Post some vids!

Yes, no mufflers, xpipe for resonator, and 2nd CAT delete. Winding it up in 3rd gear gives some nice pops and girgles on decel, but I was hoping for a bit more. The header and primary CAT are pretty restrictive. However, even Brabus, Renntech, and Kleeman say not to touch the primary CAT b/c of post primary 02 involvement in ECU mapping. So I left them alone. It's crazy loud at WOT. I'll try to get some vids this weekend of it under load with the top down.

Hey I've got a question. I'm looking swap all four of my cats on my E350 for 300 cell units as per Brabus's claim that it makes about 9whp but here I see you saying that if the primaries are removed it screws with mapping which I would assume would most likely result in some CELs. So whats the real story? I feel like you can remove both primary and secondary without triggering any lights. What did you replace your cats with? Straight pipe or higher flow cats? Sorry for all the questions I just like to do my research. Here is the text from the Brabus site on the package I'm talking about.

BRABUS B7
Base:
E350 (W211)
Power enhancement by back pressure lowering metal-catalytic converter (four monoliths with a full
OBD II suitability). The kit is completed by a matching stainless-steel end-muffler.

Technical data:
Displacement cm³ 3498
Compression ratio 10,7 : 1
Torque Nm 360 (350)
at min-1 2400 - 5000
Power output kW/PS 211 / 287 (200 / 272)
at min-1 6000

WTC...very little info out there. What I found was removing secondary CAT's no worries as no post secondary CAT sensors. Removing primaries, and yes, could run into issues. Unlike cars of only a few years ago, the post primary 02 will affect fuel adaptation if it senses it richer. The debate was still open on whether it was enough to worry about a true lean condition or not. After Brabus, Renntech and KLeeman all told me not to mess with the primaries, I chose not to. I do know if you replace the secondaries with high flow, as well as primaries, and relocate the post primary O2 sensor past second CATs, it may work OK. Of course a good dnyo tune would solve any issues, but of course, then warranty is breached. I've got almost two years left on mine and for a 30K engine, I decided to error on side of caution.

So I guess what I'm asking is (I'm in same sitaution as you warranty and low miles) is this a stupid idea? I'm going off the fact that Brabus offers this package with four 300 cell cats. They wouldn't sell something that threw check engine lights in theory right? This is a tough call, I really do want to give it a shot though.

It may be model, your talking about an e350 and I've got a SLK55. Different engine and ECU. I'm sure if Brabus says it is ok, it's probably ok. They did not tell me that and do no sell the set up for the SLK55. Consider yourself lucky then.

300 cells should provide plenty safety room for primaries, lots of aftermarket companies use 300 cell metal core race cats for exotics with no problems at all with O2 sensor. 200 cell is where you start to get close but even so, if the ECU isn't sensitive enough you can still get away with it.

You have nothing to fear with 300 cell metal core cats, they are the best option for those wanting to stay on the safe side and still get more performance & sound. You can get 300 cell metal core cats on ebay for $95 shipped each (or less if you buy in bulk).

Hope that helps.
