JesMB.de has new SLK news
Amongst other models, the SLK in 2006 will get the NA 6.3 Litre V8 tuned to about 476HP and 600NM torque... The bigger cars will see this tuned to 500 HP as the current S/C engines have to be bettered.
It says that the models to get this engine will be the M, E, S, R, including the CLK, CL and SLK!
I hope this is true!!! No mention of the SL though. I wonder if there are other games afoot for the flagship SL. Must be another V12 as the "top" model then as there will be certainly an SL63 AMG.

Thats crap news for me!....... the SLK55 that I want is a company car so that means I'd have to keep it for 3 years before I can change...... so I'd have a 360bhp version for a year and then know that if I'd waited a year I'd be in a 470bhp version
Trouble is that I need to change cars next year so I don't have the option to wait till 2006.
The only thing that could make me OK about this news would be if the 6.3ltr version was much more expensive or a different model just like the SL55 and SL65 AMGs...... I could just about accept there being an SLK55 and SLK63 but it would be bad for SLK55 residual values!!!!
Maybe that new Porsche 997 isn't such a bad option afterall!

The "new" 4-valve 6.3 engine is a replacement for the "old" 3-valve 5.5.
Moreover, when the new S Class is released (end of 2005) it will get a new 5.5 litre engine (replacing the 500 model) rated at about 410HP...
No more Kompressor engines thats for sure...

Anyone alarmed!?!
So is there is anyone else who's got an SLK55 on order who is alarmed by this news?
Is the new 6.3l V8 unit just a standard MB engine? Perhaps the new AMG engine might not be released for sometime after 2006?
When is this "alleged" SLK63 due to be on the road?
Can anybody show me where exactly they have seen that an SLK63 is going to replace the SLK55??? Don't think MB would do this, never known them run an engine in a model for just 12 months in the UK before, as would be the case with the SLK.

As far as I know the SLK is one of the heaviest cars in its class...... eg the SLK55 weighs nearly 300kg more than a Boxster or S2000 which will make it less agile.
I've just got my fingers crossed that what it loses in agility it will make up for in brut power!
