Well, what is the horsepower?

Is it 355 or 360 or 362 for the 55? I've seen all three and in MB publications, too.

HP is not a 100% absolute measurement and is effected by many variables. Every car (or engine) will measure a different HP rating. Also each car will measure a deferent HP number on a deferent day if the temperature or humidity have changed. The deference between 355 and 362 is only 2% which is statistically insignificant.

it is 355 hp, but I just tell everyone 360, the 5 extra horsepower doesn'tmake a difference and it is easier to say 360 than 355.

The reason for the different horsepower figures is because there is more than one definition of the horsepower. The following list shows the various definitions relative to the SI unit for power the watt (which is universally constant).

HP (550 ft-lbf/s) = 745.7 W
HP (boiler) = 9809.5 W
HP (British), bhp, hp = 745.7 W
HP (cheval-vapeur) cv = 735.499 W
HP (electric) = 746 W
HP (metric) PS = 735.499 W
HP (water) = 746.043 W

The SLK55AMG engine is rated at 265 kW, this translates into 355 bhp and 360 PS or metric hp. These are the only numbers I've seen quoted so not sure where the 362 hp you quote comes from unless it was a preliminary rating for the engine.

Here in the US the C55 has 362hp, so I guess he's assuming the SLK55 has the same figure... Probably more restrictive exhausts on the SLK55 rob those 7hp...

Look at about the 10th page back in the 2005 Mercedes Benz SLK-Class black brochure. The one with the big 360 degree written on the cover. The first AMG page of the brochure. It says in huge red type 362hp period!! Thats where all the confushion is.

The below info is from the mbusa website... Perhaps the SLK55 makes 362hp abroad, but here in the States it makes 355hp...

MSRP$61,220.00*
EngineAMG-built 5.5L SOHC 24-valve V8 engine
Net Power355 hp @ 5,750 rpm
Net Torque376 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm

The Mercedes-Benz UK web site says 360, but all UK magazines seem to be quoting 355. I don't know where that figure comes from, but I'm guessing that's the figure appearing in press releases.

The same engine, but fitted in a different model, will have a slightly different power output. The exhaust system differs between models, and that has a small effect on power output, so the output for the C55 is likely to be different anyhow.
