SLK55 vs 2005 Boxster S

I am considering getting either a new SLK55 or 2005 Boxster S. Just came back from the Boxster test drive and was very impressed. The price of both cars is very close so if any of you have driven both, your opinions would be helpful.

SLK55 is better in terms of performance. What are the 0-60 times?

SLK55 has more power, more torque. Also more luxurious, more comfortable. Boxster S has better handling, better engine sound, feels more like a sports car. It is a VERY close call. It probably narrows down to what kind of car do you want? If you want a more luxurious roadster with the option of a hard top, get the SLK. If you want more of an aggressive sports car, get the Porsche. One thing I dont like about the SLK55 is the engine is pretty old, but on the other hand, NOTHING beats an A-M-G!

I'll tell you this; I had a 2000 911 Porsche then a 2002 CLK 55 AMG now the New SLK 55 AMG and by far I like it most of all! The SLK that is!

IMHO the Boxster isnt a great choice. Consider the M3? My buddy was deciding between a Boxster and an M3 and he chose the Boxster and really regrets it. This was when the M3 was about to be released and layman people didnt know much about them yet.

Was it the new 2005 Boxster? The new Boxster was redesigned and just released to the public a few weeks ago. It is much better than the older car. I had the M3 and didn't like it. It was too mundane for me and the engine sound was very tinny when flooring it.

I LIKE that the engine is old 'cause it's been "Tour Proven"
and all the bugs have been worked out by now. An example
is the new C6 with the LS2 engine. The crank pulley's have
been coming loose and have been falling off raising havac
in the engine bay. Our engines are bullet proof by now and
will give us many trouble free miles. Sometimes they get it
right the first time-ie keep it simple.

SLK55 is better

Hey all. After months of research and test drives, I have determined that the SLK55 is the BEST roadster available, even if it is a bit more expensive than some of its rivals. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for (in this case). The SLK55 is a limited production, 8 cylinder "BEAST", while the Boxter S (and other cars of its nature) are merely sport roadsters"; A friend of mine owns a Boxter, and though it is a decent car for a 6 cylinder roadster, it is by no means a match for the SLK55.

Just my thoughts.

Well, if you mean straight line only then, yes, the SLK is faster. If you are a driver and happen to turn and enjoy vehicle dynamics the Boxster is better hands down. The Boxster is a true sports car through and through. I love the SLK, don't get me wrong, but nothing subsitutes for the direct connection a manual transmission provides and Mercedes has never encroached on the handling prowess of Porsche, CLK DTM notwithstanding. Eiher car is a true beauty, do you want a boulevard bruiser or a mid-engined delight with handing finesse? And don't even get me started about the lack of a proper differential in the SLK

MB protects its drivers from the perils of the road, Porsche puts them in touch with it at thier own risk :v

I have heard that Porsche is going to take the Boxster styling to look like the old Spider"James Dean Style" and is going to put a new and faster engine under the hood. 3 or 4 years
It already looks like they are headed that way with the new changes this year.

I've driven both the SLK55 (4 days and 300 miles) and the new Boxster S (2 days and about 250 miles)......

It depends what you really want out of the car...... if you want something thats exclusive, stupidly fast in a straight line, versatile and reasonably practical go for the SLK55.

If you prefer something with fanastic dynamics and cornering ability and really like a manual gearbox the Boxster S may be better for you.

I loved the SLK55 BUT hated the auto box it spoilt the driving experience for me....... when I go for a spirited drive I want to be fully in control of the car...... even in manual mode the AMG auto box failed to change gear quickly enough for my liking, it also changes up mid corner and doesn't allow smooth down changes...... finally the car I had got confused at least twice once it didn't know what to do...... when I was cruising along in 7th I had a good space to overtake somebody so put my foot down...... the car went to change down but instead it went into neutral and span the engine for a few seconds before eventually slotting into 5th gear with a big clunk...... not good.

If you don't mind autos you'll love the AMG.

I've ordered the new Boxster S...... and I won't be racing any SLK55s away from traffic lights because I KNOW I will loose big time!

You sum it up nicely. Although, I think you get more for your money with the SLK55 but the Boxster is razor sharp!

I know I don't like that old engine neither. But if it is good enough for the S, SL, SC, E and SLR!!! I'll take it!

How could you say no to an advanced 420hp 410t 4V NA 5.5L V8 in a SLK!

Yes, what’s up with that differential! Don't get me wrong I love my SLK55 but I really don't like the differential thing and the steering. My car is just not planted on the road. The passenger side rear tire spins all the time! I have to be very careful with the accelerator! And the steering is not sharp and is not very well connected to the road!

I am saving my pennies for a 911T and not a S55!:v

For just a few thousand more you don't get much from Brabus other that a new set of rims I think.

The porsche is the best handling car on the market. The reviesed version now sets the measuring stick by which all other cars are judged. The SLK is great but I would take the Boxster any day of the week. The recent test in Road and Track should help you respect the 987 Boxster...they said its better than the 997.

The SLK350 came in last and I doubt an AMG motor which is 200 heavier will help the SLK turn. Might the SLK be faster to 60? Sure.. but does that really matter?

When porsche insiders call the new boxster the drivers porsche you know its a good car.

The Boxster is junk.

The Boxster is the poor man's Porsche and that's the bottom line. My S2000 will walk the Boxster any day of the week. I'll run anyone in the new Boxster on Gingerman race track in South Haven Michigan any weekend this summer. Bottom line, When the green light pops the bull S**t stops. Any takers or are all still talkers.

Hit the nail on the head!

I nearly ordered a boxter s, it was amazing to drive smooth and positive but i couldnt justify loosing on the £12k worth of extras i was putting on it which i had to have. That is the reason i went for the slk most of the extras are standard fit. Although the boxter had some cool tricky stuff which sadly the slk lacks . That is the only reason. They are both fantastic looking cars and you wont go wrong with either.

If the performance of the boxter is an issue wait for the c7s which is the coupe version. It comes out in Sept 05 with a 3.4 lump, 300bhp, stiffer suspension and the £5800 composite brakes as standard! will be same price as slk.

As a fellow S2000 owner yes 986 Boxster is no match for the Honda..... I've run rings round several on track....... the 986 Boxster S was a much closer call.

Neither car impressed me enough to consider them superior to the S2000....... the new 987 Boxster S however is SUBSTANTIALLY better than the old car and I have no doubt that its a better car then the S2k.

If I lived in the states I would love to come and have a friendly battle with you on track
