My first SLR (pic)... and some wishful thinking...

So... I dropped by the Mercedes dealer, where I had purchased my first Mercedes... I asked for the same sales guy, and let him know that I want to buy a new car... what model, I don't know yet...

I initially thought of the SLK350, then I figured I could get the new V-6 C230 Sport Sedan and save a few bucks... or how about I go for a CLK500 instead... then finally settled on C55 AMG instead... that's what I want... I think..

anyway, the show floor beckoned, and there it was: a shiny new SLR McLaren

http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/6823360485.jpg&s=x10

Oh. My. God.

Nothing prepares you for the first time you lay your eyes on one. A nice little sign cautions the customers not to touch... look, but do not touch! Too bad, eh..

Anyway, Since I was still undecided, the sales guy gave me the keys to an SLK55 AMG ... nice car, but it would be inconvenient for it to be my only car, and I don't want to buy 2 cars.

Maybe I'll get the C55 AMG after all, same acceleration as the SLK55 AMG, but it's got 4 doors and a back seat!

And some day.. maybe in a few years? I'll pick up an SLR McLaren... :-)

The only thing surprising about the SLR is the ridiculous price! With that money, you can buy a much better car that looks, acts and drives like a supercar.

It's one thing to lock the doors so nobody screws up the interior. Velvet ropes around the thing is fine too but to have a sign saying "Please do not touch" ...no class, especially for MB.

yeah, I see how that is not so classy of them, like they don't trust the customers..

truth be told: people are stepping in and out of the other cars on the show floor, so the last thing they want is someone messing up their $450,000 car...

We did get a Ferrari/Maserati dealer here a few years ago.. I have yet to pay them a visit though... maybe after I get my AMG, I'll drive up there... hehe

Yea, Ray Catena does have some of the nicest cars. I stop in from time to time to check out the cars.

Mercedes all the way!

try driving one before making a comment like that

EDIT: but i agree that the sign lacks class. at the very least, they could have done something better than stick a piece of paper printed off their inkjet on that stand.

Of course I would love a chance to drive it but it still wouldn't change my opinion about the car. If I insisted on having a fast Benz and had that kind of cash, I'd buy rather buy an SL65 and use the rest of the money to buy a more "tradtional" supercar

hey guys... stop using my thread for your silly argument..

this is what it sounds like:

Person A: ooh, SLR rocks!
Person B: ugh, SLR sucks!

Based on what you've posted so far, I understand your point very clearly.

I don't know anything about the SLR? I know enough about it to say I don't like it for the price just like you knew enough about it to buy one (so you say in another thread)

So, if someone has an opinion that differs from yours they don't know anything? Thats an interesting perspective to have considering you're a parent. Or are you a little upset that you haven't gotten the attention you paid for?

It seems you're more proud of your Ford than your SLR since you neglected to list it on your profile

It took you 5 hours to get your post exactly how you wanted it and thats the best you can come up with?

First, I'm not ripping on your Ford pick up. Scroll back up and re-read my post. I said you must be more proud of your Ford than your SLR since you have it (the Ford), NOT your precious SLR on your profile. I'll say it again, it is my opinion that I would rather spend the money on a different car(s) than spend that kind of money on the SLR.

Seriously, I'm curious to know what your problem is. You bought the car so enjoy it instead of questioning everyone who isn't drooling over the thing. Are you that insecure with your life that you need that ongoing pat on the back??? If you do, go to the mall and park where the ricer's park. They'll give you all the attention and approval you need...they may even allow you to feel up their girlfriend's in exchange for a ride.

No, I've never driven the SLR but I know someone that owns one and doesn't have the greatest thing to say about it.

oh, what the heck.. if u can't beat 'em, join 'em...

let me offer my 2 cents.. as cool as the SLR may be, I was reading up on comparisons to the SLK, and found out that an SLK55 AMG or SL65 AMG is a lot easier to drive around.

In fact, look at this story about a rich guy, who put his SLR engine into his SLK:

If you have the money to spend on an SLR you will most likely love it. Your money, your car. Everybody's happy....

It is one of the best Grand Tourers; and the performance is incredible - incredible. 'Nuf said.

At this point it will be probably be the end of April before I commence 'the tour'; but I will be visiting one or two of them before the end of this month, and should have some pictures to post from those visits....
