Unhappy Radio Reception & Radar Detector

If any of you who owns a SLR can help, I'd appreciate it. As you are probably aware, the SLR's only power outlet for a radar detector is under the center console armrest. When plugged in, you can't close the armrest because the plug sticks up so high. Has anyone figured out a way to hotwire their detector? I can't use the Escort Solo I have because its receiving range and volume are so so at best!

Secondly, my radio reception on AM and FM is atrocious! Even the strongest radio stations aren't coming in clear. Has any owner out there had a similar problem with their radio reception and if so, how did you correct it? Thanks, Magwheel

Don't know about the radar detector but I have been waiting to see how you like the car and how you compare it to your others.

Hey Mag,

I cannot help you with the detector issue, but i know that mercedes can fix the radio reception. I had that problem with my s550 and i took it in and they fixed it. Also, congrats on the gt3rs. Do you think you can post some pics?

Thanks,
Arman

Hi Arman, Be more than happy to! These pics were taken in the garage of the small house I bought next door to our main home. I bought it to preserve the 7 acres of woods that abut our main drive which is 2500' long. These pics will have to do until I can get the GT3RS in the sun for some (hopefully) artistic pics. Mags

Mag,

You may want to PM a fellow MBWorld member who goes by "Damaged". He is an extremely knowledgeable MB and SLR technician out of LA.
I'm sure he will give you the guidance you requested

You need a hardwire kit for your radar detector. Or you could just get a Bel RX 75 or Escort SR7 custom installed. I think a Valentine 1 hardwire kit comes with purchase. Just take it to the dealer and get them to run the wire from the windshield to the fusebox. On a SLR though, I would definitely go with a custom installed SR7. Then don't have anything obscuring people from looking at you in your motorized work of art.

Hey Mag,

Thanks for the pics. I know that only 229 gt3 rs will be produced for the US, what number is yours? Also, if you dont mind me asking, did you pay over sticker?

Thanks,
Arman

In reference to the power issue. I have a similar problem in my BMW. I went to radio shack and they sell a 12volt car power adapter that plugs in and splits into 2 outlets, but the main plug is very short so I can close the center console(about half the length of normal ones). So I plug my sat radio into one of the 2 split offs and it can rest sideways and allows for it to close with just 1 wire coming out of it.

Total cost was like $9 or $10.

Ha I found a picture on the web of what it looks like.

Hi Andrew, I got 2 or 3 of those same plugs and they're really no shorter than another adapter I got at Radio Shack. The problem is that the cigarette lighter plug is so close to the armrest lid that I don't think any kind of plug will work. Really '**** poor' thinking on Mercedes or McLaren's part!

I guess they don't want me speeding so I won't get a ticket!

I do appreciate your reply though. Magwheel

I replied earlier, though I believe I violated the forum rules, and the post was removed because of advertising (which I wasn't) But anyways Chad Lozen knows ya, and I kinda in a round about way work with him and Bernie. We can take care of the Radar issue for you. Also get the radio looked at.

Regards,

i cant comment on the plug issue mag. in fact it pisses me off because i dont want to hardwire the detector in there. i like to bring it from car to car.

as far as ur radio goes u should not be getting crappy reception. i get the same reception in the slr as any other car.

Hey magwheel....hardwiring is not a problem, if you want to keep it portable still , you but an additional lighter type plug under the passenger underdash panel(that is where the sams are to get the power)
The radio reception is probably the anyenna amp...should be as good as any other MB

Hope this helps

Damn, you can't figure out how to hardwire a radar detector Are you sure your even capable of driving such a car? I would recommend you do a search on such a topic as it's been discussed many times Time to screw up your threads like you've done mine. By the way, why do you even need a radar detector? 1. You don't even drive your cars. 2. You've only broken 100 by 10MPH one time.

By the way, every time you post some crap on one of my threads, you'll get the same thing in return. Let me know when your finished playing your little game.....

Geeezzzzz (least wanted), It's a shame you just don't live around the corner from me. This way you could come over and try and teach me a thing or two about cars since you so knowledgeable!(?) And in turn, I could 'splain' a few things in person to you in return!!!

I couldn't tolerate your ignorance for 15 minutes, let alone try to explain the simplicity behind hard wiring a radar detector. I truly don't believe you would ever figure it out. Better take it to the dealer for this complex install

Hardwire

Hey Mag, I would suggest you get the Valentine hardwired into your SLR. I have a seen different cars with them hardwired and it looks clean compared to plugging it into the lighter (plus you do not have that annoying wire bothering you). There is also an alternative. You have buy the integrated Valentine with the arrows in the mirror. I do not know how it will look in your car but I know it is a mirror with the arrows just like a regular Valentine. It is really need. That is a good option if you wish to shell out like $500 for it, but then again you don't have a dumb box hanging from your windshield. If you do wish to have it hardwired, I guarantee you can find anyone who is knowledgeable in splicing and installing wires to do it. It should be near you headliner by the mirror where the short cable will stick out. Good luck and hope you enjoy your car and radar once installed.

Thanks for the suggestions Hungryoso. I'll look into the hard wired application. I had a Cleveland dealer who offered to do just that thing for me. Magwheel
